It makes sense; the world is after all ending in 2012. That it happens to be that Cthulhu is the instrument of doom prophesied by they, the most wise and foresight-driven Mayans just makes it all seem all that more plausible

Nyalathotep can take on different shapes, including the hoofed Black Man of New England lore as in Dreams In The Witch House, and a sinister, Testla-like Egyptian in Nyarlathotep. So I'm sure he can make himself look like a young Robert Redford.
