Jante is a pseudonym for the Danish town Nykøbing Mors, where the Danish-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose grew up in the beginning of the 20th century. But it is merely a universal symbol for bigotism and narrowmindness. The town is supposedly christian, but has it's own unwritten Jante "law", that has the purpose of diminishing people and make them narrowminded, hateful slaves. I think Jante is the very symbol for NT oppression and intolerance:

1. You shall not think that you are special.
2. You shall not think that you are of the same standing as us.
3. You shall not think that you are smarter than us.
4. Don't fancy yourself as being better than us.
5. You shall not think that you know more than us.
6. You shall not think that you are more important than us.
7. You shall not think that you are good at anything.
8. You shall not laugh at us.
9. You shall not think that anyone cares about you.
10. You shall not think that you can teach us anything.

Rather, lagom has a positive connotation while "Jante" iis negative. Lagom is directed at the self[-containment] while Jante is when these qualities are projected on others and forcing them into a role. In Sweden, the only way to be different without being looked on as crazy is to be a foreigner. Swedish tourists are generally disliked because they behave as idiots outside in the world, since they believe that in Greece, everyone could have group orgies without anyone reacting.

The woprd "Un-swedish" have a positive connotation in Sweden. "Oh what you are Un-swedish" is something good to hear.

This seems to be a synonym of "Epicurean"

No, rather on the contrary. It is more or less self-denial and restrainment, derived from Lutheranism.

It depends. I think lagom is too lagom sometimes...

Haha, yes, probably the only country in the world where it's officially considered a good thing to say about your own country!

Restraint and moderation are the key principles that seperate Epicureanism from Hedonism.

Lagom could maybe, just maybe, be seen as Epicurean i.e. in the sense of real epicureanism.

The Jante Law however is nothing but mutual oppression and hell on Earth.

Yep, then it is connected to classical epicureanism.

still looking up info on lagom & jante, but it looks as if it has some similarities with Australian "culture":

"Near enough is good enough" and

what we call the "tall poppy syndrome" - don't be a tall poppy - you will get cut down. Its OK to be different though, just so long as you don't get too high above everyone else.

A lot of talented performers never get any recognition in Australia. My Auntie Edna is an exception because she never lost her down to earth common touch, but Kylie Minogue for example is a no talent b***h who is "up herself". Similarly the Bee Gees.

These are the 4 I disgree with

7. You shall not think that you are good at anything.
Low self esteem people rejoice your pain.
8. You shall not laugh at us.
Comics should die!
9. You shall not think that anyone cares about you.
Being Lonely feals good.
10. You shall not think that you can teach us anything.
Schools are not necessary for good jobs anyway.

Well, "you" is supposed to be any person who reads the law. "You shall not laugh at us" means "No one shall laugh at anything" for example.

I think the cause of the hateful law (which I personally always do my best to oppose and succeed at quite often - ask me if you want tips on how to go about it) in question is the low population here, plain and simple. It's not so much the cold weather, it's the fact that not enough people live here for there to be weird situations enough for them all to catch on to the fact that the world isn't static. Any opiate user could tell you that everyone wants tranquillity if they only could, and in Sweden, they actually can.
And of course Swedes bahave like idiots when they're abroad. They're finally allowed! The biological instincts never left, they were just buried underneath the chilly cultural dogmas. Good examples of this theory can be seen any Friday/Saturday night near or in any pub, because that's the only time of the week it's permissible to have a drink at all, so the entire lot thinks it's better to really make use of it, realizing too late that they're addicted because of their imbalanced use of the shite, sinking deeper into, well, I need hardly go on.
You shall not think you can teach us anything I take to mean "Don't you dare force our heads out of our asses and force us to deal with and take responsibility for our own problems! We're not getting paid for it."
Every day I see the effects of this mentality: undermined attention and needs having been buried so long the only time they do show they scare people, so the desperation continues as cries for help in the form of violence. A little example: Nazis seem to be propagating. I read in the paper today that SD (basically a f*****g nazi partei) had gotten into the council chamber iin some small town, so it seems to be accepted on some level, at least.
The solution is to accept change, anyway. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law!
