Here is a snippet from Gingrich's biography:

Gingrich was born Newton Leroy McPherson, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at the Harrisburg Hospital, to twenty-year-old Newton Searles McPherson and seventeen-year-old Kathleen Daugherty, who were married in September 1942.[5][6] His mother raised him by herself until she married Robert Gingrich, who then adopted Newt, where they raised him in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, a small borough outside of Harrisburg (located between Harrisburg and Hershey. They lived on Main Street in an apartment above what is now a computer store, MainFrame. In front of the building there is a plaque in honor of Newt's step-father, as well as a near-by tree dedicated to his step-father. Gingrich has a younger half-sister, Candace Gingrich.

Gingrich was the child of a career military family, moving a number of times while growing up and attending school at various military installations. He ultimately graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia, in 1961. Gingrich has credited the beginning of his interest in seeking public life to his time living in Orléans, France, as a teenager, where he visited and learned about extreme sacrifices in the Battle of Verdun, and the importance of political leadership necessary to see it through.[7]

He received a B.A. in history from Emory University in Atlanta in 1965. He received an M.A. in 1968, and then a Ph.D. in modern European history from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1971.[8] His dissertation was entitled "Belgian Education Policy in the Congo: 1945–1960". While at Tulane, Gingrich, who at the time belonged to no religious group, began attending the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church to pursue an interest in the effect of religion on political theory; he was soon baptized by Rev. G. Avery Lee.[9]

Gingrich taught history at the University of West Georgia (then called West Georgia College) in Carrollton, Georgia, from 1970 to 1978. He also taught a class, Renewing American Civilization, at Kennesaw State University (then called Kennesaw State College) in 1993.[10]

Though the history may have changed, Tulane is traditionally the school that rich people send their kids to waste time studying...stuff.

And how the hell did he end up at a Baptist church in New Orleans? There's about five Catholic churches (and schools with church services) closer to him. Freakin' Loyola University is just a block over.

That must have been an easy topic for a dissertation.

He is not stupid. Very few major political players in this country have doctoral degrees. What is your point? That there exist intelligent conservatives?

Well, a lot of them have degrees in law at least.

A JD is on a much lower level than a PhD. Even a PhD in the humanities or social sciences is much more demanding than a law degree. A JD is more comparable to an MS or MA than to a PhD, and the real work and challenge of graduate school does not begin anywhere in the Master's-related coursework.

And therein lies the problem with most politicians, they have no grasp of reality. Historians study history, so they often know the mistakes people have made in the past.

That is something I dislike about most politicians. Few are political scientists or have background in history. I feel that law school can create a certain cut-throat, elitist personality that is not necessarily conducive to the best interests of people but more to the accumulation of power. There are conflicting views on what politics is, I have heard some say it is the use of influence to organize labor and ensure the 'trains are running on time' while others see it as the buying and selling of power, which is the currency of politics. Naturally lawyers are bound to be better at this then historians or political scientists (in most cases).

I wouldn't want a political scientist to be a lawmaker either. I would prefer doctors, historians, and average individuals writing the laws. Especially practicing physicians writing healthcare reform, not a trial lawyer.

The Batpists tend to be as such (not to mention notorious hypocrites and liars). Which is why I'm quite surprised he went straight there instead of to a closer Catholic facility. Makes me think that the snippet that said "who at the time belonged to no religious group" was most likely a lie.

Because we think you're silly for still playing make-believe instead of growing up and living in reality?

I would actually point out that it takes just as much faith to believe there is no god as it does to believe in God.

I could say some other things, but I'm not going to get myself reported...

There is no faith involved in being Atheist. Why do you insist on maintaining these silly, illogical postures on leftism and Atheism? I don't sit here telling you that you are A), B) and C) because you are Christian. So essentially, f**k off, or stop making insulting assertions about things you are not informed of
