Dutch expected to make preparation of halal meat illegal
Next month the Dutch parliament is expected to approve a ban on halal and kosher methods of slaughtering animals for food.
Those who proposed the ban say it is simply an issue of animal welfare, but it received strong support from the right-wing Party for Freedom.
Many see it as a violation of their religious freedom, and among the Jewish community it is a worrying echo of a similar ban brought in by Hitler.
Interesting.

Pointless.
All they want to do is to piss of the religious people in the country, it's not going to change anything, it's just going to create animosity. This is the type of discrimination that makes religious moderates go over to the religious fanatic camp.
But then, societies with political and/or religious extremists rarely produce great thinkers...

Nah, it'll give business to butchers who are just over the border. that much will change.
Jews are not a problem in the Netherlands. Muslims, that is a different story. Van Gogh's great nephew was murdered in broad daylight by a Muslim fanatic.

There are several reasons kosher and halal slaughter is better than standard slaughtering techniques. I'm not going to go into details, the facts are already out in the cloud. But I will say this. Kosher meat generally tastes better, so why not use it on a larger scale. And both techniques are more humane than industrial slaughtering techniques. I'm far from being a vegetarian, though I don't like the idea of having to kill an animal so that I may live, but my biology needs the extra carnitine. There is something to be said for the cycle of life and how normal it is for living things to eat other living things.
If you ask me, it's world war 2 all over again. We mustn't let our petty fears and misunderstandings guide our actions.
You don't have to be religious to see history repeating itself. It's written in black and white newsprint.
Halal meat is sometimes used as a means of keeping money within the Muslim community. They don't have to eat halal chicken and chicken slaughtered the normal way is not haram, it's just makrooh (not ideal, but still allowed). I remember some of FB friends (I went to mostly Muslim high school) were all going crazy because they found out some of the Nando's outlets were not 100% halal and they made a page saying 'it's HARAM!' - until someone pointed out 'it's MAKROOH!'.
Nando's is always full of Muslims where I live, when there's nothing stopping them eating at KFC. Granted, Nando's is nicer than KFC.
That aside, I really don't support banning halal or kosher food because it wouldn't achieve anything.
However, it is getting to the point where halal meat is the default in some parts of the country - which sucks if you're a Sikh or if you just don't agree with halal slaughter methods. We don't make kosher the default option in many restaurants and canteens. Personally, it's not an animal welfare issue, I just prefer my animals to be slaughtered without any superstitious rubbish involved (kind of like how I'd like a non-religious funeral for myself, I'd also like one for the living things I consume). ![]()

The BBC news is not telling the whole situation and it is rather old news.
The ban was proposed first by the animal welfare party (I am shamed to admit NL has such a party and not a party for real issues).
The right-wing party PVV is supporting this proposal, not only for the muslims but also for animal welfare. There is a part of the party strong for animal welfare. They also proposed the animal cops (there were already other organisations, but these are real police).
The law was supported by the House of Representatives (Second chamber), but still has to pass through the senate (First chamber). In the Senate there is not a majority, yet.

I think there are legitimate concerns about the Muslim population in Europe however I don't think attacking the practice of their religion is helpful at all.

I regularly patronize a deli/pizzaria operated by muslim bosnian refugees. It's very good food. You can get bacon on your pizza - they just wear gloves or wash their hands after they make it. But their house specialty pizzas are all beef, lamb, or chicken. And delicious, but i digress.
They are in the same strip mall as the local halal butcher.
My east-indian coworkers tell me that they get all their lamb and goat from the halal butcher. Only a couple of them are muslim, but who doesn't get a hankering for lamb vindaloo every now and then?
On the other hand, the muslims in my town haven't murdered anyone in broad daylight.
I'm surprised at the PVV supporting the ban for kosher meat as well, as Geert Wilders is extremely pro-Israel and pro-Jewish in general.
They sound like fanatical zealots.
It would draw a line in the sand. I don't think this is really as big a deal to the general public as not being told when meat is halal or kosher or, worse, when the supermarket try and hide the truth from people about their meat being halal or foisting it on people's kids without their consent. That's the sort of thing that encourages revulsion and gets people's backs up.
A lot of it really just is about caving into a threatening Muslim minority. That said, I'm not sure I'd have that much of a problem with it if there were non-halal options and halal meat is clearly displayed/marked, otherwise it's nasty and devious if you ask me.

They actually put bacon on the pizza?! !!?! !! !! !! !! !?! !! !! !! !! !! !
The Pakistanis where I live won't even say the word 'pig'. They spell it out: P-I-G, as if that somehow makes it less offensive to Allah

Turns out bosnians are more pragmatic.
Bacon is a topping you can get and they don't claim it to be turkey bacon or anything. Ham as well, iirc. But those are in the fine print at the bottom of the menu.

I swear, if all the Americans who go on about Britain's "terrible" attitude towards Muslims actually had to put up with this lot, some of them might come away a bit more sympathetic.

We have our share of Muslims (and bad attitudes towards them)
We are just better at assimilation third generation americans can not even tell you what country their
family is from half the time.
-resistance is futile-
