In a few days I will be old enough to be eligible as a candidate for mayor. I have done a lot of thinking about what I really want and I think that all I really want is power and admiration. Politics is a way to get that, I'm not a team player but I have always been told that I was a born leader. But with no money nor political contacts in the area I don't know where to start. Any books I should read?

PS: I have studied Politics for a short time so I'm not just just going into politics to go into politics.

If you are in Europe, good luck.

If you are in the states, it would depend what part of the country you are in.

Perhaps a classic, like the Han Feizi?

What country in Europe are you in, BTW? Because in much of my native USA, basically anyone who acts like an idiot, who an average person would like to have a beer with, and answers questions ambiguously, yet with a smile, can be mayor. I most of Europe I here they value intelligence and problem solving in their politicians more.

The main thing is if you are in a small town or a city, for it should be relatively easy to get elected in a small town if you have any social skills, as you obviously have the mental capacity to run such a town.

Most politicians seem to like Mein kampf for their official guide although I would not recommend it.

Read your local newspaper. There is no point in running for mayor if you are unfamiliar with local politics. Then go watch your local mayor in action. There is no point in running for mayor if you wouldn't want the job once you actually got it.

Being mayor is no place for a person who is not a team player.

Mayors typically have very little independent power--the purse strings are held by council, and Mayors almost never have the ability to exercise party discipline to ensure that budgets are established the way they want them.

Meanwhile Taxation is usually controlled by a more senior level of government--meaning that there is little scope for cities to accomplish goals without the cooperation of those levels of government.

Cities (and the mayors that lead them) are hugely beholden to the interests of local business who provide a crucial share of tax revenue, given the significantly higher value of commercial property, and the larger scale of industrial property.

Mayors can only survive by building networks of support within council, higher levels of government, business, political blocs and communities. Of all political jobs, it is probably the single worst one for a typical Aspie!

The only political leaders who have real power are heads of government at the national level (and the subnational level in the case of federal states). But the only two ways to that job are through the hard slog of team play within a political organization, or through the barrel of a gun.

No offense intended, but unless you live in a small town I doubt there's a substantial chance that you'll win.
