Interesting ideas and, for what social security was when it was designed and what retirement age actuarially meant, it seems quite reasonable.

Keeping all of these old farts in the labour force until the age of 70--just sounds like a terrible idea to me.

Probably means that more and more people will be signing up for SSDI in their sixties.

Why? What is wrong with an able bodied and able minded person doing honest work?

Yes, i was going to say that Chaffetz is an ass, but this is the least smelly thing he has produced to date.

Problem is employers don't like to hire older people.

Raising retirement age would also increase the age at which such discrimination starts occurring.

The ever-increasing retirement age sounds a little unsustainable to me. Older people have a hard enough time getting work as it is.

If the wages are low enough they can get work. Older workers know how to concentrate and can do a better job.

How low do they have to be to pay for insurance to hire someone who's bones are going to shatter if they slip?

After their bones shatter, they can go on SSDI. After two years on SSDI, they will qualify for Medicare.

Hasn't one of the arguments been about general health and longevity as well? Back when it first started most people died shortly after retiring, sixty-somethings seventy or eighty years ago were much less healthy than sixty-somethings of today, which themselves are likely to be significantly less healthy than the sixty-somethings that my generation will be another thirty years from now. I think that's why raising ages would be relevant over time - as public health and intervention improve in quality and particularly as people's receiving ages keep creeping upward.
