It seems that HHS is pandering to the pro-lifers.

Really, now the pro-lifers and Christian Right are saying birth control is abortion. One of the evangelicals that backed this decision even said "Take the politics out of it and it's a decision that reflects the concerns that many parents in America have". Um, putting politics in it was the entire point. This is just one step over to the government controlling a woman's reproductive organs. With the pro-lifers, all they want is to getthe child out of the mother, and they don't care what happens afterwards. Why can they not keep their religion out of my politics? :x

I'm not sure what they mean "use it properly". I don't have any real medical knowledge so I don't know anything the potential misuses and dangers of the pills but if it's safe it should be available. If it's just about not "encouraging promiscuity", what is the difference between this and a minor buying a condom? This pill being available will stop actual abortions.

Pro-Lifers are hypocrites. They wrote the legislation that eliminates welfare for additional newborn children. So if a Mother decides to keep her baby she cannot get one red cent for diapers.

Why should minors be buying these products in the first place? Isn't having sex with a 12 year old statutory rape?

That's not the point. The point is that birth control should be available over the counter and that no one should be playing politics with issues such as this.

Actually, it is the point. Why would a 12 year old be buying it in the first place? Say a pedophile convinces some girl to get this pill from over the counter and then heads off with said pedophile.

If they are under the age of consent, why the hell are they having sex in the first damn place.

Who says that will ever happen? Have you ever heard of a young teen buying condoms? It's up to the parents to teach their children about the do's and don'ts of sex, not the government.

Are you suggesting we should next allow alcohol for minors?

I don't think I said or even implied that. Are you suggesting that we legislate morality?

Plan B is untested when it comes to minors, since it is also a hormone based drug, it could have pretty damaging effects.

That can be easily solved, test it on women no younger than 17, and make it available at the pharmacy counter.

Couldn't said pedophile just buy the pill himself in any case?

That said, I do find it difficult to understand the logic in allowing someone under the legal age of "adulthood," without his or her parents' knowledge or permission, to purchase contraceptives and/or have abortions. If the law says that your parents are responsible for you, shouldn't they at least have a right to know that you're buying condoms or getting an abortion?

The wife is pretty bent out of shape about this one, it really does look like a blatant election year political ploy. I'm sort of meh about it, but I get why other people would be upset.

Only those methods which prevent a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall. Protestants who object to some kinds of birth control do not oppose barrier methods which prevent the egg from being fertilized in the first place. Catholic objectors have a different position. They feel that nothing should prevent the fertilization.

I find the "morning after pill" to be repugnant, but I agree the whole kabosh was political. Obama is coming up for re-election and want's nothing more of controversy than has already happened.

Frankly, a good reason this pill should not be available to any woman under 18 is based on the fact that it does it's job by messing with hormones...just like birth control pills, and frankly, why doesn't anyone point out the FACT that messing with hormones...even a little...brings serious health risks over the long term. It's easy to hide increased risk of cancer, heart disease, etc. on other factors a woman encounters over 20-30 years, but every time I see a woman who's considered hormone therapy, the risk of other medical problems as a direct result of messing with her body's normal hormone levels is always cited as a risk factor for her to consider.

But birth control pills and the "morning after" pill are perfectly safe for minors? :?

Since many of the young girls are out there banging the bells (or is it balls) of some young swain, deny birth control either means more mouths to feed or more abortions. Which do you prefer?
