Effective tax rates are already at Reagan era levels. There were lots of loopholes and deductions in that era, and a much smaller percentage of the population payed the top marginal rate.

Post-WW2 tax receipts as a percentage of GDP have stayed right around 18% regardless of tax policy. Here are some interesting graphs:

If they want to boost revenue, policy-makers should focus on increasing GDP, if you ask me.

I don't believe it is fair. Think about it this way, if you work hard for your money, save it up, invest it, and you end up wealthy, would you want to pay a higher tax percentage then some one who isn't working hard and doesn't have a lot of money because of it?

So you're basically asking if it is okay and fair to raise taxes on small business owners, which it is not fair.

Ask companies if they think small business owners are wealthy and belong to their club. Go ahead, I dare ya.

The money has to come from somewhere. And taking a little from the rich in taxes is hardly going to hurt them - while taxing the rest of us would be financially devastating.

I know some small business owners. By no stretch of the imagination are they wealthy.

But by calling small business owners "rich," the Republican party makes the wealthy look like your next door neighbor who you go to church with, or who you lend DVD's to. In most cases, it's just a lie to humanize Wall Street executives and the captains of industry, so we, and not they, will take the hit in cuts in services so they can keep getting tax cuts.

No more or less right than it is to raise taxes on any other demographic.

The converse is true, it is not fair for the wealthy to pay a smaller tax percentage, and since the US is the bizaro world, that's exactly what happens...

The rich invented the state, the state is the rich's b***h. And thus it is fair that they pay the most of it.

That almost makes sense.

The focus of the problem is the government which has run amok.

Another approach is to modify the government so it does not plunder and surppress the multitude.
