The first candle for Hanucha of 5772 is lit and in the window to advertise the miracle.

הנר הראשון של 5772 מואר ובחלון כדי לפרסם את הנס.

Me, for one. I am heading home shortly, to do the same.

Like everyone else (even you, Jews, admit it), I used to think the story behind Chanukkah was pretty lame, as far as miracles go. But given international politics over the last couple of decades, I'd have to say that stretching out oil reserves seems far more compelling than a pregnant virgin at this point

Does it matter that it seems lame? If faith must ground itself in the awe-inspiring supernatural, then faith will always find itself on the losing end with the rise of reason. Regardless of what my faith teaches me, the world was not created during busy week 5,772 years ago. But I don't rely on the miraculous to ground my faith. I rely on the commonality of custom and ritual with millions of my fellow Jews the world over.

Besides, we save the big time miracles for Passover.

Ninth candle. In Hebrew Shamesh means utility agent or handy man.

True. But there are highly improbable outcomes. The Jews of the holy land managed to beat the Greeks in a thirty five year war of insurgence. That was the Good News. The Bad News: they got the Romans to help them.
