I have been watching the unintentionally hilarious Channel 4 documentary series
,on the lives of Irish Catholic Priests, Father Ted with my lovely wife.
The questions came up "How much do these Guys get paid ?" and
"Short of being defrocked for heresy or crimes can they be fired for goldbricking ?"
I eagerly await my answer.

In money, or boys?

This is not a question about what currency but how much.
I am also interested in who foots the bill for the local priests.
the Vatican or the parish?

I've never thought to consider that. I'm not Catholic so it's never mattered to me what Catholic clergy get paid. Seeing even a recently built cathedral once though it does seem to me that they really spend money on mere buildings.

It depends. If the Preist is a member of a religious order then his financial needs are met through that. If he is not a member of an order then the money comes directly from the parish collection. Priests attached to an order traditionally make less. In general though they do not make much.

I am going to focus on 91 answers as he is actually catholic.

I am sure it is more like a stipend than a salary.

So Jesuits and Franciscans get paid by the order but ordinary priests by the Parish.
What if they are crap at their job? not criminal or evil just incompetent?
Can they be fired?

That is about right. They get enough to make do.

In general. Some Dioceses collect everything a Parish makes and then distributes it from there. Most Dioceses just let Parishes organize their own budgets. Also most Parish Priests do not necessarily take a vow of Poverty; especially if their position requires them to own property.

They usually don't get through the selection process. In the last few years, despite the shortage of Priests it has become harder to get through. If one does not have what it takes their quest to become a Priest can be curtailed and they end up in supporting positions like being a Deacon. If they are really incompetent or unpopular they usually move into the archdiocese and become administrators. Yes they can be fired; its called being laicised; it removes and bars them from all roles but does not revoke their holy orders. In extreme cases they are defrocked.

My understanding of it (and I should said that I am a catholic but don't claim to hold all the answers) is that its the local Parrish but there is a system in place where by rich parrishes support the priest of poor ones as for are they rich or not there are some priests who have not taken a vow of poverty but and have some other job my old priest was also clinical psychologist however he gives almost all his income to charity and he gets a much smaller stipend from the church.
