Whenever I come across fanatics like these kinds of people I feel tempted to spray em down with a fire hose. Who else cannot stand these kinds of people. No I am not hating on Christianity just fanatics and Bible thumpers.

I don't get why protestors who aren't hurting anybody are always getting beat down with clubs and chemical gas, and these guys get to spew their vile hate and intolerance under the protection of ... tolerance, of all things.

Also, what the hell is wrong with these people?

Because of people like that, even us moderate Christians are treated like social pariahs.

WBC's doctrine made a wrong turn somewhere in the '70s I think it was, and most of them never looked back. I don't really care to get into the things the Bible Says and the Bible forbids, and where WBC went wrong approaching it.

I love, absolutely love getting into debates with these sorts of people. Especially in public.

Invariably, they'll start quoting the bible at me. Big mistake. I attended catholic schools. Had bible classes right in between math and english every day for years. Attended church services two or three times a week. Plus a couple years worth of confirmation classes. Plus a couple more years of classes when I was my father's sponsor when he was confirmed. Plus a couple of sacred lit classes in college. I know that damned book as well as (better than, in some cases) most clergy.

So when they start throwing bible verses around (usually taking them completely out of context and misunderstanding the hell out of them), that's when I get the chance to really tear their arguments apart, make them look like the complete fools that they are.

Tim_Tex, I agree with you that there are many many moderate, reasonable Christians out there. Far more of those than of this type. It's unfortunate that the lunatic fringe (in any group really, not just Christians) tends to be the most vocal. And I agree that people like this are probably the reason why so many have such distaste for Christianity. It's unfair that the reasonable majority get painted with the same brush as these asses. But I think there are far too many Christians in this country, too many who do accept it, to call Christians "social pariahs."

I'm curious about exactly what set that woman off in the first video. I mean, the guy behind the camera isn't wasting any time antagonizing her, and she seems fairly calm until she's told to leave. I'm not sure what exactly is going on here since the video is pretty 1-sided, but the other customers seem awfully smug and even amused by her reaction. She may actually be in the wrong for all I know, but it looks to me like she's been picked on somewhat. So unless I know more about what's going on in that, I have to conclude that she's being unfairly represented.

As for WBC...there is some debate as to whether they are a pseudo-Christian cult.

The thing about WBC is that they aren't "technically" doing anything wrong. They are using their freedom of speech to make their message public.

Besides questionable theology (focus on hate, insulting language, disingenuous calls to repentance, etc.), their tactics aren't representative of Christ-like behavior described in the Bible. It's bad enough that they do the whole "God hates f@gs" routine, but they also actively protest and disrupt military funerals--protesting those who died for the defense of national security to ensure that people like WBC even have a right to protest at all. Sure, there's no law against protesting at funerals. But it's a monstrous thing to do, especially to those who are mourning.

WBC in recent years has begun facing INTENSE opposition to practices like that, including counter-protest groups that have shown up in such force that WBC's access to their intended protest sites were blocked entirely.

I'm not convinced that WBC is any stronger than their leadership. The Phelps's won't be around forever. They are hardly taken seriously as it is, so they'll eventually fade over time.

There isn't anything wrong with these people, well maybe there is, but most of them have been sucked in to a very disturbing and flawed religion and somehow believe it is true when it's not.

I also think it would be funny to tell the members of the WBC, "Fag" is a cigar you idiots! Get your definitions right!"

I think the the WBC is in a class by itself. Not even your typical bible-thumper wants to be asssociated with them.

If figure their goal is to prove creationism. Some of them look like they were created in 1 day.

I think God did a rush job on this batch.

Sheesh.

Please don't confuse the WBC with bible-thumpers and/or Christians.

I've known several very conservative, pretty thoroughly bible-thumping types who were very kind people. They would be at least as appalled as you are about what the WBC is all about.
