I don't really buy that attack ads sank Gingrich in Iowa. If the ads weren't of substance they wouldn't of stuck. People found out what he was really about and ran away in droves.

I think its obvious that the biggest factor in Iowa was the media, they flexed their muscles and proved that they were still firmly in control. Santorum surged basically from last place to first purely because of a fraudulent CNN poll and non-stop positive coverage in the last week despite having no organization or money, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. They did the same thing with the other pumped up candidates but there was no time to properly vet Santorum like was Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Gingrich, and Trump. They'll probably try doing the same thing in New Hampshire with Huntsman, they're so predictable.

Those ads helped to raise awareness about the kind of guy Newt is...
They definitely hurt him.

If not for the ads, voters would not know how mercurial and corrupt the man was.

I think Santorum won because the religious right had to pick someone who wasn't Romney and they chose him.

Certainly, favorable media coverage might have influenced the choice, but it was always going to be between Santorum and Bachmann.

People don't often spontaneously "find stuff out", especially within the time span of a few weeks. Taking the lowball estimate, having SIXTY attack ads barraged at you is going to make a pretty f*cking big impression - Ron Paul's probably benefited somewhat from the initial media shutout (as it meant that there was less "dirt" on him in the electorate's mind).

Ron Paul won the evangelical Reconstructionists, but there's no way the much more centralist dominionists were going to back Paul.
