After WWII, my uncle brought home ashtrays, necklaces, knife handles, etc made from Japanese people.
On one hand, this behavior is disgusting and troubling.
On the other hand, how can we expect young men to kill people, tolerate the deaths of their mates with little to no grieving, and NOT behave with little to no regard for human life and remains?
This is one of the costs of war.
