HEY! That's only because we have this idiot Sarkozy who's right-wing in power. -.- I for one am not happy about his way of doing things which are a bit facist. If you really want to see racism, try the Front National of Jean-Marie Le Pen (now passed on to his daughter, Marine Le Pen), they're a bunch of xenophobes and with the current crisis, they're being increasingly more open about it. -.-

I don't mind having Roma (or as we call them in french "romanichels") on the territory of France, as long as they don't cause trouble and are the like of the family depicted. =/

Yup - I agree. Parties like the FPÖ, BNP and FN aren't something different altogether from the other parties and people I would never vote for. Often, they're very clever with the law and will be very near the edge with their campaigns and speeches. Having said that, the BNP are a small party in the UK electorally (smaller than UKIP) and they've undergone a decline in popularity here in any case.

That's terrifying. Over here you have to be at least 2 shades darker than that guy before you start getting s**t on :D

Maybe in New York. Here on the Left Coast, you only have to be of a different economic class to be a target for bigotry.

She is obviously experiencing culture shock.

Every country has its idiosyncracies, and if she stays there long enough, then she will get over it.

I can remember how the perception in America used to be that Black Americans - often intellectuals, artists, writers, or performers - went to France to escape racism.
I have to wonder, has that changed in later years? Or was it really ever true?

Josephine Baker who as as dark as night was taken to the heart of France as an anti-Nazi hero. When she died all the traffic in Paris came to a halt for a moment of memorial.

That is absolutely true. But what's since happened?

Josephine Baker wasn't that dark skinned - but I see your point.
