Pete's views on a lot of things I agree fairly well with... but was against a fence on a highway here in Michigan along a large wetland where turtles used to get smashed a lot, especially during mating egg-laying season. Those of you know me might guess I didn't agree with him on that ....

Anyway, his campaign for U.S. Senate ran this ad during Super Bowl yesterday:

What's the takeaway? Pete doesnt pay full price for asian hookers? But Debbie does? I'll have to side with Debbie.

Is Pete Hoekstra also against American corporations outsourcing jobs to China, or is this all about government spending? And how does he feel about tax breaks for the filthy rich, which are the main reason that the US government has to borrow money?

I don't know what he thinks of U.S. businesses having out products made overseas and Mexico. In the back of my mind I was asking this question. Dumb ad.

The ad was shot in California. The actress is obviously American, faking a coolie accent.

She's hot, though. You have to have some sexy women to sex up your political ads. This might just work for him.

It seems that a lot of people view this ad as incredibly racist:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/0 ... 56912.html

I have to agree that the stereotypical pidgin English -- "Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good" -- was out of line. But I don't see how this discriminates against Asian-Americans.

Then again, you never know what unintended consequences this kind of racial stereotyping might have in the current economy. I hope it won't be anything like this:

Quote:
Michigan has seen its share of Asia bashing, especially in the 1980s, when images of sledgehammers smashing imported cars were common. Chinese-American Vincent Chin died after being beaten to death in 1982 by two unemployed autoworkers angry about competition from Japan.

huh? Racism doesn't require discrimination. A dumb stereotype is proof enough for racism.

What I mean is, the ad stereotypes a native Chinese person, not a Chinese-American person. It is not meant as a shot against Asian-Americans as far as I can tell.

But I understand that it must be offensive to Asian-Americans, who often find themselves confronted with such stereotypes, to see this spot on national television (in the same way that Borat is offensive to Kazakhs, or Brüno to Austrian and/or gay people, even though those movies are regarded as parodies rather than racist stereotypes for some strange reason).

Pete "kill jobs now" Hoekstra's ad was truly hilarious, in no small part because China's own deficit stimulus spending is helping to mitigate the global dip in aggregate demand. I wonder how many jobs and long overdue long-term public investments Pete "kill jobs now" Hoekstra is willing to sacrifice to save a few bucks in the short-run.

One thing you have to keep in mind: American voters are really, really, really dumb, and respond to advertising.

Not true. I am a U.S. citizen. What country to you live in? I find that comment about American voters insulting.

Why do you think people are reacting the way they are to this ad?

I am American.

If American voters weren't really, really, really dumb, then no Repugnicans would ever get elected.

All political advertising in the USA is aimed to play on American stupidity.

Also, if American voters were not incredibly stupid, then there would be absolutely no need for kazillions of dollars to be spent on low-class political advertising, because no-one would respond to it.

Instead, candidates would make their aspirations publicly known on their websites. Voters would carefully read and ponder the information as presented.

The websites would also provide the candidate's tax returns, list the candidate's prior convictions, out-of-court settlements, plus list all persons, other than the candidate's present spouse, with whom the candidate has committed either fornication or onanism. Ideally, the candidate would also fully disclose his masturbation habits.

The fact that so many voters like to watch the cheezy advertisements that accompany their football games is a clear indication of the level of intelligence and interest that most of our voters possess.

If a full assessment of the impacts of Herman Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan had been made available, and people had paid attention to it, then Mr. Cain's joke wouldn't have been taken as seriously as it was.

American voters are ignorant because of America's terrible public education system, which is funded and regulated by the government.
The government is producing the type of population it desires. Easily deceived and easy to control.
