Hello,
I'm American and our free speech laws can get fairly complex, but the actions of the officers in the video are legally defensible. The occupy protesters were given an ultimatum to leave by noon on monday by the police. They refused, so the police were forced to remove them with...well...force. The protesters have a right to protest what they're protesting on public land (they were on public land in the video), but they may not protest if it disrupts the use of the public property by other citizens for other things (jogging, picnicking, etc). Other people pay taxes to use the parks and sidewalks, and they have as much right to those places as the protesters. The police could have been less brusque, but the protesters were breaking the law.
disclaimer: I am NOT a conservative--I just dislike people who are not educated about our laws and complain when they break them.

if you look at the date you will see its actually before monday, also mentioned in the video.

that being said i really dont care about legally defensible, he wasnt threatening to the police, tasering him was excessive

anyway, why was it only one guy even bar all that why is it only one guy that was arested at that instance when there is a livestream of many of the protests still happening?

ah, thought it was monday. My sense of time sucks lately.
It likely was excessive, but he was refusing to cooperate and was evading the officers.

At the very beginning of the video he is antagonizing the officers with much more confidence than he displayed toward the end.

Chances are, they knew him on a personal basis.

I do not generally agree with most cops - however

They are peace officers, and he was disrupting the peace.

Free speech or not, violent suppression of protesters is an American tradition.

This country is rapidly descending into a totalitarian state. Alex Jones might be a bit over the top, but I think he is being proven to be correct.

perhaps they were making an example of him, or they had a personal vendetta?

they were all closing in on one guy, he probably deserved it.

I must say the occupy DC camp looks very nice. They ruined many beautiful parks here in Portland, Oregon. It's a shame. In LA, they've left 30 tons of trash at some sites.

If you are afraid of a police state, you should be fine with an armed populace, wherein the state doesn't have all the guns. What is your answer to that? Disarm the state and the populace?

The cops really don't have it easy. Most cops really don't care about the political status quo, they're given orders, and they have to follow them.

As far as the average cop is concerned, the protestors can scream all they want, as long as they don't disturb the peace and do anything illegal. Then a superior higher up the food chain wants the protestors removed yesterday, and the cops follow orders, and of course the protestors don't want to go, there's name-calling and build-up of aggression, and so we see what happens when people who don't have tear gas and pepper spray go up against people who do have tear gas and pepper spray. The latter set of people tend to have guns, too.

in denmark the police is leggally obliged to disregard any orders that go against the constitution, no matter who gives the order.
not that they actually do so as can be witnessed at the climate summit in copenhagen, that however led to a major cleanup in the danish police department with several officers being sacked and many fined to pay compensation to those arrested.

next time there is a protest they will hopefully be thinking twice before breaking the law.
