I never noticed these "...who claims to be an atheist" qualifiers in the media until now. It seems to be mostly a US phenomenon though. I have no idea which German politicians are atheists, but my guess is that more than half of the German Parliament members have no religious affiliation. Even our Christian conservative party accepts atheists (as well as Jews and Muslims).

No "self-proclaimed atheist" will have a chance in American politics--if they aren't Jewish, then they have to feign Christianity.

"Self-proclaimed homosexuals" have a similar problem.

It may be a reporter's inside joke related to all of the handwringing over whether Obama is really a christian.

From now on they should always say, "who claims to be.." just for comedy value.

Personally, I think that all Republicans are closet liberals, all Democrats are closet socialists and communists. Only Constitutionalists are true conservatives, especially since we want to ban all political parties, caucuses and special interests off of the face of the planet.

Meh, Santorum's too paleo for my tastes.

Now a president who "claims to be" a b-boy or a dj, I might want that investigated just for curiosity.

As in "paleoconservative"? Are you serious? He's a bleedin' neo-con.

Santorum's Christianity is of the Latin Mass Catholic fundamentalist variety. It's odd that so many evangelical Protestants would embrace him, as he believes there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church. I don't doubt he's a Christian, but as his religion is of legalistic absolutes, I sincerely doubt that what he believes is palatable to most Americans.

We have a Prime Minister who is an atheist. I have not seen this described any more than the former Prime Minister's Catholicism. We have had agnostics (Hawke) and someone who was certainly a 'self-proclaimed' atheist, Whitlam.

The traditionalists of the sort you seem to be describing go to a Tridentine Mass. Santorum goes to a standard Novus Ordo Mass that happens to be in Latin.

Can you give me a source for this please?

True, the GOP isn't as socially conservative as I'd like to see it.
I’ve known several older people that used to be democrats in their younger years but switched over when the democratic agenda became more radically leftist, especially on social issues.

It is pretty funny, the candidates(Newt and Frothy) that have courted evangelicals the most are both Catholic. Bachmann who played that card as well was a Lutheran.

I'm going on what a friend who is Catholic had told me. One of his uncles was a Latin Mass Catholic, and believed there was no salvation outside of Rome. If it can be demonstrated that frothy doesn't believe this, I'll apologize.

Radically left? Dude, your American. There is nothing radically left about the American democrats.

The American left is nearly centre, not "radical leftist".

If the GOP was any more socially conservative, Republicans would wear white pointed hoods and burn crosses on the lawn of the White House.
