Yes, he is trying to pander. But any normal person would say something different. Remember, he has had time to prepare this speech.

When he talks about his ability to recognise a car from a certain part, he is really talking about an ability or hobby that he used to have. It's strange, obscure, and something that he is proud of. He even makes the point that he isn't so good at doing it with Japanese cars. At this point, he is way beyond pandering. He is telling a true story about his life that people cannot relate to. How many people make a habit of guessing cars from car parts?

I considered myself a misfit because I was a rare adolescent male who was NOT obsessed with cars. So these car things screams 'normal' to me. Though a friend in my adolesence who was my opposite, and who could spot a 68 impala in a movie was probably adhd-but I digress. And that thing about japanese cars is a deliberate clever pitch to american auto workers who fear foriegn competion-a clever code planted for part of his audience- nothing to do with guiless enthusiasm for a hobby! That remark was actually very clever and very deliberate pandering!

Well, I googled this so it was on my mind as well. The guy just seems a little odd and uncharismatic to be running for the presidency. I have to echo what others have said here, I'm not sure why Romney is so odd, but I think it has to do with the fact that this guy comes from the world of super-rich people and is used to conversing with them and their ilk. So when he talks he seems very stiff and awkward. Also, he probably does not have a history of being disagreed with. His stature, wealth, and intelligence has probably gifted him with certain psychological advantages that have meant that people don't challenge him very often, and when he is challenged he becomes uncomfortable. I've seen the guy on 60 minutes with his family and there he seems like a normal, nice guy. It's just when he gets behind the camera and starts "campaigning" he fails miserably. If he had more charisma he would probably be better off than he is now.

Mitt Romney suffers from dumb-schmuck disease.

Unfortunately though, the majority of American voters are pretty dumb and vote for the most likable candidate, and not the one who's qualified for the Job. They re-elected Bush in '04 and the idiots in the Democratic Party chose Obama and not Billary as the nominee.

i was listening to a lovely story on the npr about psychopathy or sociopathy and it seems like mitt is one of those. i say the story was lovely because we often think of sociopaths killing people and whatnot, but there are folks who use their sociopathy for good instead of evil. not saying which one mitt is...

How are they using it for 'good'? Per definition, doesn't a sociopath not care about the moral impact, the good or evil, of their choices and actions towards others?

Mitt Romney is not an Aspie. He is a Gentile. He has a goyische kopf.

He thinks like a Gentile and he acts like a Gentile. He also probably has not had an original thought in the last 40 years.

Mitt Romney would be an aspie if it would get him elected. But because aspies are such a small portion of the electorate it not possible for him to convert.

He reminds me of this guy Peter Popoff, Romney has not found a way to be as overt as Popoff.

Popoff hooks the desperate, dazed and greedy, he tells them exactly what they want to hear.

100%, Romney is no aspie.

You mean because he clearly lacks empathy?
No, I don't think so.
