My mom used to support me in my beliefs, even though she is Christian, yesterday she allegedly saw one of her students in her SED class possessed and the school police officer took him to a church to be exorcised, apparently his grandma cursed his family. today my mom got me a crucifix which i immediately said F*** NO to and my mom forbade me from saying ANYTHING about Atheism anymore.......im sorry who i am is not going to change if she can't accept that im gonna tell her to f*** off and she will be dead to me, my favorite Uncle(strident Atheist and moms favorite brother) is already dead, my older brother has already abandoned us just because we hate his new wife, so i wonder how mom will act if i abandoned her also?

I HATE RELIGION.

Sorry ... My second response is, "She will probably try to make your life miserable as she sinks ever more deeply into the odiferous morass of her religious beliefs."

Good luck.

for my 17th birthday present my mom bought me The Quotable Atheist and The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, she even bought me The God Delusion a few months later, now she is saying i am not allowed to express myself anymore? WTF???

i hate religion also, religion is slavery. i always say IF God exists i would prefer to go to Hell because thats where all the Intellectuals and Freethinkers are going so OBVIOUSLY thats the place to be, in Heaven i would hate everyone there anyway, it would be kinda like if a Christian went to Hell lol when my Atheist Uncle Robert died i said he is probably in Hell right now going "it's not too bad down here" lmao

it's possible to disagree about religion and yet still be respectful. if you do not like how your mother is approaching your beliefs, you might want to sit down and have a heartfelt conversation as opposed to swearing at her or attacking her beliefs.

if you are living in her house then i can see how it could be uncomfortable. so if it gets intolerable to the point where you are going to start using foul language, you may want to consider finding a way to move out instead of making your relationship even worse. it can be tough to live with someone who has very different beliefs when they are pushing them on you, but because she is your mother she is probably extremely concerned about your immortal soul or whatever. your best bet is to gain some independence, if applicable.

She sounds genuinely terrified of demons, which is ridiculous for a modern adult in the developed world, but I have a tiny bit of sympathy for her. I also feel for you because parents need to be consistent; changing the way she interacts with you so dramatically and suddenly is terribly confusing. If the whole demonic possession thing wasn't considered a valid part of Catholicism (I assume your Mum is Catholic), I'd actually worry about her mental health.

I recommend you make your independence a priority right away

like half a dozen people allegedly saw the possession including the police officer(he was the one who took kid to Church)

@Hyperlexian i haven't said anything yet, i tried to talk to my mom but she refused to listen and told me she doesn't want me saying any of my Atheist bulls*** anymore, i gave that as a possible option AFTER i get a job(searching, had 1 interview so i guess that's a good thing)

Okay. That means around 6 people jumped to the conclusion that it was a possession without investigating other possibilities. Have you asked your Mum if she has considered whether or not what she really saw was a possession? You know, even people of faith are called to be enquiring about such matters.

agreed, it should also be worth noting Jorge(kid who got possessed) has schizophrenia and has been talking about getting off his meds to try and join the army, my mom swears it wasn't the schizophrenia, she was scared out of her mind but idk Jorge is 15 and over 300 pounds of pure muscle because when he is working out is the only time he doesn't hear the demons so it could have been him not taking his meds allowed the "demons" to take over, that's a plausible theory

Very, very plausible.

the police officer was SUPPOSED to write up a 5150 but, being religious, took Jorge to be exorcised instead.

i disagree with prayer healing, i always say if you want to know if prayer healing works take 2 cancer kids(i purposely use children in analogy) give 1 chemotherapy and give the other "prayers", which one do you think will live?

You know, there is a type of Tourettes I kind of...have...that is associated with these weird exorcist rages, and involves my voice dropping into a scary-sounding "demonic" growl. Let's put it this way, the reason I know I am not going to ever "flip out and start killing people" is that, if I haven't done so by now, I'm not gonna. Seriously, these rages were something from out of the Twilight Zone. It's kinda neat, and fish oil helps keep it under control.

Anyway, your mother sounds like she just had a fright, and she will come to her senses before too long. Don't let it worry you.

Well, if you want a flipside to this, to see how your mother is viewing you and your situation, think of it this way. Imagine you have a kid who becomes Christian in your atheist household, how would you handle his newfound beliefs? Just something for you to think about.

He's been an atheist for a goodly amount of time. They're not 'newfound beliefs'. This only started after the possession incident.

i have been an Atheist for nearly 4 years, my mom has always been supportive of me until now, it's what parents SHOULD do. give your kids ACCURATE information and let them come to their own conclusions about life and, as long as it's not violent or anything, you should support them. of course i found out the information myself with the help of various scientists and philosophers and formed my complex, yet logical beliefs about life and the Universe, i am a spiritual Atheist, Pantheist is more accurate, but all my beliefs are firmly rooted in logic and reason and the more about life i learn the more i expand on my beliefs, i reject dogma. that's the beauty of science, everything can be disproven, facts are only true until better facts that explain more come along. religion doesn't offer the same flexibility as science. its all just "unquestioningly believe in what this ancient book that has been proven to be false is true or burn in Hell!! !" i like Fnord's signature "religion is telling the unknowable to the gullible while maintaining their ignorance." i tried explaining to my mom that the only Trure Christians are the Westboro Baptist Church and those like it because they follow the Bible exactly how its written and they are legally known as a Hate Group because the Bible is filled with evil attributed to God, honestly if you ever read the Bible most evil is NOT done by the Devil, but by God, and as the Creator of EVERYTHING he created evil which makes Him the most evil being in the Universe because, despite having the power to not create evil, He did anyway and then accused us of creating it. religion in general defys logic, that's why i don't buy it, the Rapture is the only thing that will convince me that God exists.

my mom tried saying that the Devil is MAKING me say this stuff when i tried talking to her, but reading the "Holy" Bible made me say this stuff
