Should Puerto Rico even want to be admitted right now?

I've been listening to WAPA radio out of San Juan off and on through the day and they keep talking about a vote regarding independence/colony status/statehood that's possibly coming up. I rarely spend a day on this station without hearing numerous mentions of PNP.

What would you guys say in their situation? If I were them I think they'd be at their wisest to make that decision based on what happens to us at the end of the year. If we start showing every sign that we're going to go the way of Greece I'd feel horrible for them if they waited this long, became a state, and then got dragged right down with us.

Your take?

What's happening at the end of the year? Mayans?

Puerto Rico can do whatever they like but if they want statehood they'll have to start paying income taxes. Whether they joined or not, they'd miss the money if the US were destroyed.

I believe they're having another referenda in November on the issue again.

I think Puerto Ricans should decide their own fate. I don't think their island would fair as well on their own but I wouldn't blame them not be caught up in our mess. It's a more complicated issue than simply yes or no, I don't know how it would effect the everyday life of the Puerto Rican voting on it.

Americans should be more concerned with the bill passing through Canada's parliament on annexing your country (except for the South and Utah)

Our agreement with a large group of West African nations is they get the South, to do with as they will. Nobody wanted Utah

As I understand it they vote on this at intervals every few years.

Its not like they are finnally getting some long delayed hearing.

For decades the population always votes to keep the island as a commonweatth- neither plunging forward to become our 51st state, nor stepping back to become an independent nation.

Its seems to me they have it cushy- they dont pay taxes- and get more say in congress than the citizens of DC do (who DO pay taxes). So if you were them why would you change? They get their cake and eat it too.

This is voted on quite regularly, and I highly doubt this time around the result will be any different.

Seems like I heard there is similar pressure for Iceland to join the European Union.

In both cases it seems like the leaders are for it but locals folks are skeptical.

It seems to me small countries could try to advertise themselves as a haven for people trying to flee faltering nations with the money.

Geez, you're stepping ALL over Mexico's toes on that one.

There ya go. Then again they kinda have that friendly but not absolute association as a commonwealth right?

Yeah, I've heard Penepe brought up often for a long time.

Mexico showed up to the meeting but for some reason they were directed to the side door on the invitation so nobody ended up letting them in until after the meeting concluded. They did get a fruit basket

Per George Friedman in 'The Next 100 Years' we're supposed to have a non-lethal weaponed war with them for Texas and the southwest by 2080 or 2090. Sounds like they might be handing their fruitbasket back to the Canadians across the N/S boarder rather quickly in that case. :)

The South is already inhabited by lots and lots of west Africans.
I'll gladly take Utah if no one else wants it.

Not to worry, anyway. An annexation of the U.S. by Canada wouldn't amount to anything more than you all lining up on the border and singing Mr. Rogers' "Won't you be my neighbor" to us.
