For a while, I've had the interest in being a political advocate for people with Asperger's Syndrome, but I don't know how to start. Because of the incorrect perceptions of others, I don't think I've been treated fairly by society. In spite of having above average intelligence, and creative talent, I've been denied a career because I can't win the battle of the first impressions. I want to give society a message that they're wasting valuable resources by discriminating against people like myself and others, I've been either underemployed or unemployed my whole life; and I think it's important that I deliver this message to society and change some attitudes. I don't consider AS to be a disability, I consider myself to be adversely affected by society's disability.

If anybody can help me get this message out, I'd appreciate it.

what a great message. seems like everything is for sale in the usa, so lobbying would be a good idea. since nobody in this friggin country wants to do something for someone else unless its made a law.

a poster on here had a great idea about setting up some apartmartments that she owned in upstate newyork, for people with As. i don't know if she still posts here though, since housing is like the #1 concern for everyone, not just people with As. i have a hard time finding a stable place to live so i thought it was a great idea.

First of all, I think its a brillant idea! Perhaps you could design/make/print some posters or leaflets and stick them in consicipous places. Perhaps a slogan. Perhaps you can organise a protest.

Start a topic in a forum. Have the link (if you're allowed for the signature.)
If you end up with posts at what seem like unreasonable hours to you, you can probably blame the English (me included) for that one.

Good luck! Hope it goes well! *continues to wish you good fortune for the next 6.5 hours*

Great idea JWPhotoGraphics! I've been thinking about politcal advocacy for awhile, too, especially after a bad job experience this summer. It makes my blood boil that I often have to hide the fact that I have AS or face discrimination. One thing I'm working on is a letter to the editor of one of the local newspapers about the struggles we Aspies face, and am constantly thinking about publications that I might write to about AS. I just need to push myself in that area more. It's high time society's preceptions about AS are changed, like you say.

I've honestly never been discriminated against. But then again where I'm from Asperger's is completely unknown.

The discrimination is viewed as the fact that due to our AS we cannot deal as well with people and that hurts us career wise and causes rejection. Most people don't know about AS and don't treat us bad because they know. The only cases where I have seen otherwise are where idiots argue that AS people are mentally deficient.

How in the world are you trying to get that point across?

You don't have to know a lot about politics to advocate for AS!

That's where my strength comes in. I'm a master of comedy. I work as comedian to make money. (Still below 18 so don't actually need a job) I do skits and general stand-up mostly, they have a very Carlos Mencia feel. (I insult and offend everything that moves and some things that don't) I'll do what I can though. Maybe an aspie newsletter or magizine? Articles by aspies for aspies and such? (Expensive I know but a good idea anyway)

This semi-related to an exam topic I just had to write about: Disability is a feature of the environment, not a feature of the individual.

I'm in! After a while, it has dawned on me that I have more confidence knowing that AS is the sum of my abilities. 8)

If I ever become a rock star, the whole basis of my performance would be 'Aspie induced'.. I'd try and write for those who could relate while playing some killer guitar riffs
