Whilst Aunt Jemina and Uncle Ben come from the states, my own country came up with this:

I even remember that advert in the '80s.

Aunt Jemina is a racist figure and a sterotype of black americans.

Aunt Jemima may have had her roots in the "mammy" archetype, but in all honesty the current image isn't so demeaning. If anything, it adds some ethnic diversity to food mascots.

Like, you mean that the Irish viewpoint of Ronald McDonald is "He looks creepy"?
Or did I miss something else? :?

By the by, the name Lord Ronald McDonald appears in this old song

(the first time at just before 2 minutes)

I have sometimes wondered whether that was where Roy Krock got the idea for the character.

Now that I think about it more (why oh why am I thinking about it more), Ronald McDonald does have red hair. Is someone trying to imply that all Irish people have hair the color of fire engines? Hmm? Hmm?! :x

just kidding :lmao:

also :dj:
because it was there and I wanted to use it.

I've never even thought of any Irish connection. Ronald is a Scottish name and McDonald is a Scottish clan name (it can be spelt with Mc or Mac). I've never thought of him as being Scottish either, he's definitely American.

That is pretty much how I see it. His nationality has honestly never even really been something I have thought about. He's just a clown who promotes burgers

One that is not that popular anymore, it seems to me McDonald's doesn't use Ronald much for their advertising anymore, at least here... most McDonald's commercials I see are about their coffee, I assume because they are trying to break into a market dominated by Tim Horton's in my country

There used to be this pub near where my family in the UK lives, it was called "All Labour In Vain". The sign showed a little boy who was black in a tub and there were four ladies trying to scrub him clean. Lot of people thought this was racist, I can see that but then ... the boy had this mischievous smile like he knew the ladies were idiots, so I'm not sure.

I wonder if it's also because it slowly began to filter through that the whole clown thing was just very, very weird...

Yeah - there's an uncertain area nowadays where featuring a little black kiddie can be seen as racist simply because he's being featured at all...
In this case though, I can see the humour in it and I don't believe it was racist. Unfortunately it's "of another time" where the humour would be seen and appreciated as the parable it is but unfortunately, that's unlikely to be the case now.
