What do you think of using those words as slang? Personally it sounds more outdated to me than anything else. I mean it's 2012, not 2002, right? :D

They're just words. People are quick to demonize words because it's easier than considering the context.

I think 'gay' is an overused term for 'lame'. Just my opinion.

That does seem to be a sound assessment of the problem. It seems almost like a loaded gun issue, doesn't it? Should we ban the guns entirely, or should we just try to teach people that it's very wrong to use guns to try to hurt others? Not a perfect parallel, of course.

What if a term that previously described you started being used as offhand slang?
If I was in a public place and heard a bunch of teenagers calling each other Autistic in jest I'd be pretty ticked off. I know that to a lot of people they're just meaningless words. To some people, they have huge significant meanings that are inseparable from themselves and their lives.
But, I'm a big supporter of "words mean what they mean, stop screwing up language for the rest of us."

I do use lame. Which is maybe kind of hypocritical? But I don't know, people don't really call those who can't walk 'lame' anymore. While the term 'gay' still primarily means people, especially men, who are attracted to the same sex.

I don't get 'butthurt' hearing the words spoken by other people, to use another new slang term. I just think it's like, so nineties. lol

I believe in picking my battles. This is not a hill that I'm prepared to die on (metaphorically speaking).

That's not to say that others aren't perfectly correct to take issue with this.

So in essence, you'd say you disapprove of it but it's not such a big deal that it bothers you?

this

Seconded.

This does not mean that I will blatantly use them specifically to hurt someone's feelings.

I'd never say those words to offend anyone. But I don't mind seeing or hearing those words.

Personally, I find both those terms offensive in that context, and would challenge a friend or family member that used them like that.

Just my tuppence worth...

I don't find it offensive, but I don't use them often either. I just don't see the need for it (much like racial slurs).
