Astral Projection/Meditation
Anybody else out there interested in meditation or astral projection? A few months ago I started getting into a video series on Youtube called Spirit Science. I started learning about chakras and meditation and other things which I previously had very little understanding of. I have since tried meditation and had at least one interesting experience with it, but I want to do more. I want to know more about it, and I REALLY want to astral project. Does anybody around here have any advice/suggestions? Any specific techniques to make astral projection easier?
Also, I'm not totally sure if this is the right place for this topic, but no other section seemed to fit any better either.

nothing more then I would get from a 2 hour sensory deprivation tank session. Regulating my breathing is not as easy especially if I cannot keep focus or my mind begins to wander or the environment is just too distracting.

...ahem...
There is scant evidence to support the claim that anyone can project his or her mind, soul, psyche, spirit, astral body, etheric body, or any other entity to somewhere else on this or another planet. The main evidence for this claim is in the form of testimonials of those who claim to have experienced being out of their bodies when they may have been out of their minds.

If you want astral projection, try playing around with hallucinogenic drugs, sensory deprivation, things like that. That's about the only way you'll get what you're looking for, and I highly doubt it'll be anything like what you expect.

Advocating illegal drugs? There has to be some WP rule against that.
GGPViper beat me to it, but I'll re-iterate...
There is no valid empirical evidence to support any claim for psychic abilities, an astral plane, an ethereal plane, or psionic principles -- these belong to games of the fantasy genre. Testimonials are not evidence. Belief is not evidence. Rumors and assumptions are not evidence. Show me some evidence, please?
What's In The Box?
I have a container. This container holds three common, ordinary objects. The container is located where it can not be disturbed by strangers. The challenge is for any alleged Astral Projectors to locate the box, examine it and its contents, and then report in this thread everything you've learned about the container while in astral form.
This is not a game of "Twenty Questions". I will not provide hints. You must provide a complete and accurate description of the container, its location, and its contents. I will acknowledge only those claims that are completely accurate.
Oh, and check your spelling. If you say "The container is red", and it turns out that the container is actually a newspaper wrapped around its contents, you can not claim to be accurate just because the words "red" and "read" are homonyms.
Of course, I expect the usual excuses to this challenge ...
- "It doesn't work that way" -- Well, the claim is that astral projection allows the practitioner to leave his/her body, travel around at will, and observe object and events in remote locations as if they were physically present.
- "I don't know where to project" -- Concentrate on my avatar; it features prominently in the location where the container is hidden. If intent is any guide, then you should find the location right away.
- "You're blocking my attempts" -- Wrong. I doubt. I do not prevent. It's up to you to either prove your claims or admit that you can not.
- "You will not believe me, anyway" -- Wrong again. If you get the location and a description of the container and its contents 100% correct, I WILL BELIEVE.
- "I do not have to prove anything to you" -- Then as far as I and other skeptics are concerned, you likely have nothing to prove at all.
If you really want to make believers, then there is always the James Randi Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge.
... unless you have some lame excuse about not being interested in the money, so if you win, just give it all to me!

As in an out of body experience? I've had those and they feel very real. I thought perhaps OBEs were delusional and would induce schizophrenia, so I stopped. It freaked me out because I would hear lots of voices, as if there were people whispering right beside me. It gave me physical sensations too even when I "returned" to my body.
I remember during one, I was walking around my bedroom and I could see everything laid out as they were around 6 months ago.
OBEs, whatever they are, are really easy to do -
1) Keep awake for as long as possible, which will teach you to sleep when you want to. This is actually very good advice for some insomniacs. Anyway, you need to get into the state between sleep and being awake...
2) In order to do this, you lay on your back so it induces sleep paralysis. When you're in that state, it'll feel like you're trapped inside an incredibly heavy body/shell, and as the name suggests - you can't move. Keep trying to move - one way is to let yourself fall backwards out of your body, or roll over and out. You eventually come out of the "shell" and can sometimes "see" what's around you.
3) I wouldn't do this without creating some sort of mental barrier around you, like some kind of shield. It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but I'd rather be somewhat safer than sorry...because, well, why not? If you believe you're not protected in some way, it might come out as a bad OBE/dream. I got instructions from a book called "Astral Travel and Dreams". It's a very practical book and is actually full of exercises on what to do. Not rubbish like, "1...2...3...imagine this".
4) If you're prone to mental health problems, I wouldn't do this!! And just because something feels like real-life, it doesn't mean it is.
As for chakras/auras, you can teach yourself to see those too. There's plenty of instructions for it on the internet. I managed to teach myself enough to see one around my sister's ex once. There's a painting somewhere of baby jesus with the exact same colours that I saw. This time I stopped because I was afraid I might see "spirits" or blobs of energy with no explanation. Urgh.
^^ All subjective claims, without objective evidence.

Astral projection is just some self delusional fantasy with no basis in reality other than maybe as a daydream or hallucination.
This. Astral projection appears to merely be a hallucination.
Meditation, contrastingly, makes no metaphysical claims.
Even worse.
1) can be hazardous to your health.
4) puts the entire existence of this thread into question given the frequency of psychiatric co-morbidity among individuals on the spectrum.
Lol! I never said it was real, if either of you had read my whole post. I was just suggesting a different experience.
When I said to keep awake for as long as possible, I forgot to mention that you do it until you get very sleepy. Not for days at a time - therefore that isn't hazardous. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
Umm, I don't know what to say for number 4.

The best method I've come across is to work with lucid dreaming. Do dream tests. Check, in waking life, to see whether characters change on written script or digital clocks, check to see if your fingers go through walls, and check to see whether lights turn on and off when you flip a light switch. Pretty soon, you'll find yourself doing the same tests in dreams and find that the lights don't shut off when you flip the switch off, text does change when you look away and back, and your finger can go through solid matter. When this happens, you can abruptly wake yourself into a state of sleep paralysis. At that point, concentrate on the humming and ringing you'll be hearing, and this will cause what feels like millions of volts of electricity coursing through your body. At this point, you can role out or float out and walk around.
Yeah, but for a hallucination that's pretty standard and perfectly believable stuff.
Not astral projection as a psychic would call it, nor a true out of body experience, but they certainly seem real.

It depends on what you meditate on. There's much more than just emptiness. Affixing the term "mere" or "simple" to anything is just a way of asserting simplicity and understanding without actually explaining anything.
