Going back to KFC, the real secret of their success was using pressure fryers, which could cook the chicken in half the time of standard deep fryers. I believe they originally served whole chickens and cooked them in 15 minutes, which was quite fast for the time. Harlan Sanders was also a pioneer of the franchising system, which faced legal challenges at the time as it was seen as a scam and a form of pyramid scheme. The Colonel was an interesting guy, a complete failure until fairly late in life, and then a trailblazer in both cooking and business. The whole "Colonel" thing was also just an honorarium, the title of "Kentucky Colonel" being bestowed by that state on notable citizens, but Sanders took it pretty seriously. His early employee, Dave Thomas, went on to found Wendy's, and often spoke affectionately of the Colonel and his many eccentricities.

Alas, I've heard, again on MSNBC, that talks have broken down between Hostess and their workers. So I guess they're done. Now, management is trying to convince the judge that their golden parachutes are justifiable, even though the workers will be left with nothing. I hope the judge sticks it to them, and they'll end up with nothing, like their employees.

Socialists? They were killed by corporate mismanagement, which led to them attempting to take their losses out of their workers pay and benefits.

God forbid that the high priests of the Church of the Free Market should be held responsible for any harm to the economy, as we all know the invisible hand of their god, the FREE MARKET, can do no wrong!

I have no patience with the Crony Capitalists. They have betrayed and sold out the great promise of the Industrial Revolution. The Proles are as they always have been. People of limited mind and scope and concerned only with their relatively trivial personal concerns. There reason why there are Proles at all is that 85 percent of the human race is not terribly wise or bright.

In all fairness, there have always been people who have worked mundane jobs, and have had exceptional intellects, but because of circumstance had never risen to anything higher. My Dad had been one of the best read people I've ever known, and I had loved having intellectual discussions with him, and yet he was a laborer at an aluminum plant. My Dad had suffered from chronic depression, and I believe probably had had undiagnosed Asperger's, and so he stuck with a job he hated for it's monotony. As well, the author and poet Charles Bukowski, formerly a skid row alcoholic had worked in a job at the post office that he hated till he was fifty - and only then managed to pull away to write successfully.

Quotes are appealing to me and in light of the recent trying economic times, I believe quotes regarding freedom and capitalism ring true.

"Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society." Aristotle

"We have a system that increasingly taxes work and subsidizes nonwork." Milton Friedman

"Any governemnt solution to a problem is usually as bad as the problem itself." Milton Friedman

I believe it was Aristotle who also said, "Women for children, boys for pleasure."

for the benefit of curious WPers everywhere, it was Aristotle who wrote about such things [pederasty] in Politics, II 6.6. Athen. XIII 603a. but the phrase "Women for breeding, boys for pleasure, but melons for sheer delight" is a Pathan proverb, also reported in similar forms from the Arab countries, Iran and North Africa. this was referenced in Sir Richard Burton's translation of Kama Sutra: the Hindu art of lovemaking, intro.

thank god for wiki. :)

back to the thread at hand, i believe the baker's union just could not abide the hostess' management giving itself millions in bonuses despite losing the firm $300 million over the last decade. they believed that if they just knuckled under to those robber barons, they would be prostituting themselves to those bloodsuckers. IOW it was a matter of personal honor for the baker's union.

Another quote that I like is by Abraham Lincoln and it does make a person think about past and current world leaders, as well as past and current bosses, etc. No one that is a leader is ever perfect, but leadership does often seem to reveal a person's character and resolve, etc.

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power."
