Quite simply, we're not in Humpty Dumpty's world, and the words we use don't just mean what we want them to mean. Words have baggage, whether you like it or not, and you don't get a pass at using a word with negative baggage simply because "you don't mean anything by it". I mean, should I simply be allowed to call a dark-skinned person a "n*****" simply because I say I'm not racist? No, of course not! We are living in communities, and words are social constructs, with much further ranges than just what you mean to say at a single moment of time. Your words are not just yours, they are the whole community's, and you don't get to define them as you want (if everyone had their own private vocabulary, communication would be impossible). So you can be offensive even if you don't mean to be.
Of course, you may disagree on the community's treatment of a word, just as I find it a bit exaggerated to consider the word "Black" offensive. But that doesn't mean you can just ignore it and expect communication to flow smoothly. People have their own ideas of what a word means, and they can't read your thoughts. So if you use a word they find offensive, they will be offended, and there's nothing you can do about it. "I didn't mean anything offensive" isn't an excuse here, because no one but you knows what your meaning was. The listener only has your words to get to your meaning, and they will interpret them in their way, not yours, because they can't know your way.
I think your mistake here was to expect your listener to know in advance that you didn't mean anything offensive. Why should they? I mean, could what you said not have been understood as "despite being Black, he's cool/nice"? In that case their reaction was absolutely normal.
Having conversations is a complicated thing, and one of the important parts of it is to know your audience, and adapt your speech accordingly.
I asked my friends about it later and they knew it wasnt meant to be taken as offense, yet said person took offense at the time. and btw I said it in an excited voice as my friend was excited about getting to know someone.
Im called b****, h** and a bunch of other things by people and I just laugh it off, because I know the person who says those things, is only joking around with me.
