our politicians are primarily self interested and ambitious
and often are reflective of the people in their district. i can
see where james madison has read his thomas hobbes...

That is not the point. The point is that we cannot depend on good or virtue to make our government work. We have to figure a way so that a self-interest person can carry out the functions of government sufficiently well. If we had to depend on saints, angels and heroes, we are beat before we start.
