I am a Pole, In Poland you can get a Christmas tree in several different ways.

First grow yourself
Second Buy in the supermarket (120 pln which is 40 USD )
3rd Buy from state forests. (50 pln which is 16 USD )
4th Yourself cut down from the state forest (legally by buying special permission) (30 pln which is 10 usd
5th Cut down the state forest without a license (to steal). (0 pln if you aren't caught :D because if you do you can get penalty up to 1000 pln which is 322 usd or even court trial)

I'll have artificial Christmas tree but i don't dressed it, i'm to old and to lazy to do it, as Christmas tree i'll prefer watch them in their natural environment in the forest, but may brother buy live on every year, but he has to daughters who like their Christmas tree gift:)

Poles do not earn as much as the Americans, British and even Germans but we do not consider yourself as poor.

Many decides to steal Christmas tree from the state forest because it is a superstition that the stolen Christmas tree, bring the family happiness. Interestingly no one has bothered to steal it from the supermaket, perhaps out of fear of embarrassment if caught. A state forest governed by Polish State Forest Agency is public property so why pay:-)

My country is mostly farmland and most of the trees we do have are deciduous. I get an artificial tree from the supermarket. We had a real tree at home one year, but it was constant hoovering.

I love the real trees but no matter what you do, those needles will not stop dropping and it gets overwhelming and vacuumed a lot.
In the US , a variety of discount stores sell Scotch Pine, Spruce and Norfolk Pine. Spruce is very difficult. Like the way they look, but so uncomfortable to touch. Wonder if the needles stay in better?

On average they cost between $25-$50 depending on the type of tree. The Norfolk is the most expensive. I haven't looked at them in a few years though, ,so they could be more expensive now. I gave up on real trees because of the constant tidying up they require and I watered and cared for it daily. Nothing stopped it from shedding.

At discount stores like Wal Mart, Target, Hobby Lobby, Lowes, Home Depot, they sell the artificial trees and those can cost anywhere from $30-$500 maybe more. They can be quite pricey.

I live in a major Christmas tree growing region, so I get mine straight from the farm.

I don't bother with a tree myself, others have trees which I view.

I've yet to have family over my place at Christmas.

The key to needles, is variety, and keeping it in that state between dead and alive.

That's an interesting tradition! I have not heard of something like that here. Not sure if people try to take trees. I would assume not so much in the town I live because it's Christmas and people are nervous about offending God by taking a tree without paying.

Who said anything about offending God, if someone tried to take a Christmas tree from the private land if it could be considered stealing and breaking the seventh commandment, "You shall not steal", and the private property is a sacred thing. But the state forest is owned by government, at least in Poland, so take yourself Christmas tree out of there is not stealing at all.:-)

But when it comes to me I prefer watch Conifers(Christmas tree) in their natural habitat :D

In Arkansas we have lots of Eastern Red Cedars, people in the country cut one off their land,or someone else's.No one cares if you get one off state or national forest since they are not valuable trees. But don't get one off a Park Service land, the rangers get fussy.
I have a three foot Norfolk Pine that I use.it's a houseplant so I use it every year.
But I consider it a Solstice tree,I don't celebrate Christmas.

I got my miniature artificial trees off of a friend's mom, who no longer had a use for them.

I once got one from a local woods (legally - it was on common land). I am not sure carrying an 9' tree home on a 50cc moped was legal though...
