I'm starting to get a little freaked out by some of the local reactions to the CT school shooting. Today there were police "drills" held in multiple schools while the students were in class, without prior notice to their parents. There was even a SWAT team hanging out in the common area of one school. Tomorrow, more police are expected to deal with "end of the world" concerns (I wish I was making that up, but I'm not).
I am not afraid of another school shooting, though I would like the schools to discuss rational, long-term security plans. I am also not afraid that the world is about to end. But I AM afraid of jittery, armed police roaming school hallways. I AM afraid of what effect this may have on the students' psyches, and I AM distressed that so many people in my community seem to have lost their grip on reality.
Is this going on all over America, or are people particularly insane where I live??

The whole world is equally insane. America is just crazy in its own special way.

What? The way they should deal with the end of the world is to make it a lesson on faith and reliability-
"Anyone who wants to stay home on Friday is welcome to call in saying that they're staying home due to the end of the world. If the world isn't over by saturday, anyone who stayed home is docked a letter grade."
See if anyone takes them up on it.

well, there are idiots who believe in the "end of the world" preparing for it, and I heard part of that includes defending their food supplies and shelters from strangers with assault weapons.

I should have said, "More police are expected in schools tomorrow to deal with 'end of the world' concerns."
In fact, some schools have now announced they will not open tomorrow at all.

If the world ends, won't food and shelter end too, as well as our need for those things?

Irrational behavior by the majority should always be scarier for people than outliers such as spree killings.
