I was reading David Pearce's philosophy about ending suffering with medicine. Do you think suffering and hard work changes us for the better? What if we were just happy and content by taking a pill? I think we'd become more creative and not seek entertainment as a form of escapism.

It would be great if I could take a pill like Percocet for the rest of my life and never get addicted to it or build any tolerance. That would be the perfect drug for me. Much better than SSRIs. Why aren't the possibilities of these types of medicines explored more by psychiatric researchers and the like?

To me the ends takes precedence over the means. If we can acheive a goal without the suffering and hard work, why be stupid. When it comes to transhumanism though I'm somewhat skeptical. For instance i've heard transhumanists getting excited over medicines designed to remove the need for sleep. The body (especially internal organs) needs shutdown time that medicine cant replace.

A technocracy without the need for mind numbing, repetitive labour would be my ideal society.

It's like body building. If you could just take a pill to get muscles or have surgery to get that build, it's not the same as going through the training to get there.

They do my Aunt as well. Some people cannot tolerate them and then there are people like me who feel internally corrected by them.
