At least they got somewhat nicer treatment than the Indians south of the border.

Our Indians are now largely in the Casino business.

That's a sure way to ensure underrepresentation of their interests.

Not if those interests involves sovereignty and preservation of their culture.

I must say, when I look at the sizes of their reservations and their populations, I'm a bit surprised they haven't declared them independent already. I know it's not much compared to the size of America, but compared to the size of European nations, or Israel...

How much sovereignty do they have? I know they're exempt from State law, but do they have to follow all Federal laws?

Gambling is a cash cow, yes, but perhaps they'd be willing to consider diversifying their economy? Do any of them have universities on their land? Airports? A decent railway infrastructure?

Tobacco products sold on a Reservation are taxed at a lower rate. So the White Man can buy cigarettes that will kill him cheaper from the Injuns than at his local supermarket. Think of it as revenge.

Next to impossible to explain without a lawyer on Native American Law. Short version is that the US Courts have been very protective of the US Congress's powers to regulate Native American affairs, as opposed to US States' attempt to get jurisdiction over reservations.

Except that staying away from governments in countries (such as Canada or the US) where the Federal Government has some jurisdiction over aboriginal communities is a foolish, head-in-the-sand type project.

What is it they want? To repeal everything but the original treaties between the tribes and the Crown?

If the bills are a problem, surely the best way to protest would be to make it clear to the government that, whether they pass the bills or not, they won't follow them? Tribal nullification of federal law, as one might call it.
