http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/upd ... 48404.html

The details of James Holmes's first hours in police custody have been published. I read through the article and came to the following conclusion, he is a psychopathic genius. The way he planned out every single detail of his plan is beyond what the average person could do. My question, what was his motive? Why did he come up with such an elaborate plan? Did he allow himself to be caught?

Hah. If he were truly a genius he wouldn't have done what he did.

Insane does not mean ignorant.

I am in no way praising him, the level of planning he went through is just shocking.

I would use the adjective "diabolical."

Most spree shooters aint that bright.
I heard he was a dolt, a shadow of his dad, useless gamer and never to be anything great.
He was just a lonely dreamer with tons of time on his hands to make plans, not that hard really.
Totally lost in lala land though

And how many of us could be described this way? Someone can be intelligent and still unlikely to succeed.

Since there is no reliable way of spotting addled folk like him, we have to deal with the damage they do after the fact. Having a compulsory test for being sociopathic or psychopathic would be an open invitation to institutionalize anyone who deviates from the "social norm". It would be a means by which the government could remove anyone who disagrees with its policies on the grounds that such disagreement is "sociopathic". The Soviets used to do this. Any political divergence was "diagnose" as a form of insanity and the person having such troublesome views was wrapped up in a straight jacket.

Maybe by going up, talking to him, getting him to invite you to his apartment? Then you can see all his booby trap materials. If you want to find out what the people are up to, you must get close. It's the only way.

maybe what will come out of all this will be lots more informants and people who inveigle themselves [in a law-enforcement capacity] to suspicious types to scope them out up close. shades of "1984."

a checklist of boxes like
gun ownership,
video games,
age[spree shooters are young males whilst before were middle aged]
affluent family but son does not live up to expectations[quite common now in a failing economic model]

I'm sweet except on the failure bit

I wonder if they made forum postings....

It seems the main value in the US is to be wildly successful. It no longer seems ok to do a decent job and to live a good life. The pressure to succeed and to go beyond the accomplishments of our neighbors and peers is all encompassing these days. Many stress their kids will not lead a good life if they do not get into ivy league schools and smooze with the richest kids. An education at a school fit for the individual and a career in an area matching the person's interests and abilities is no longer the ideal. I just have to wonder when these values mix with a person who is unable to relate to society and unable to connect with individuals that these horrific plans then come about. Their thinking is they will show us how brilliant and powerful they are when they hav no hope of meeting todays expectations for success.

Genius? I would say no. Geniuses are able to put their gifts to good use even if they hav issues that they struggle with.

The fathers of these recent monsters:

Brevik, dad was a foreign diplomat
Holmes, dad brilliant lecturer
Lanza, dad million a year executive

LizNY yes
but decent parenting may offset this insanity
how many of these fathers are undiagnosed PDDers???????
maybe they think: I'm brilliant so I dont need to parent correctly.........
or cant due to emotional disturbances
[or an overly material agenda and focus on the world stage- no emotional room or time for little Jimmy]

here's a video game and movie to keep you occupied

psychopaths have no emotions, so they are able to plan better because they won't get impulsive or emotional and lose site of their agenda. They have a goal and manipulate anyone to get it. The legal definition of insanity is that the person doesn't know right from wrong so they just don't know that what they did is against the law. Regular crazy people don't plan stuff like this. I've known some really smart people who go through all sorts of schemes to make money and I can't understand why they don't apply their street smarts to getting something done to make a legitimate living. I think sociopaths have a perverseness that makes them feel better about themselves when they outsmart society. Psychopaths wouldn't care to risk their well being, but a mixture of both sociopath and psychopath is a bad combination.
