In response to Rick Scott's bill to allow students the right to individual prayer at school events he's getting overwhelming support but....probably not where he would have wanted it from...

This was just too weird to pass up.
It's interesting that this particular group of Satanists (the Satanic Temple) has a completely different philosophy than the atheistic neo-Ayn Randian philosophy of LaVey a la the Church of Satan. They are theistic and even have a conception of the "Circle of Compassion" (no kidding!).

Satanism is an eschatology thing though. Technically you could work soup kitchens, rescue lost kittens and feed them yourself, shelter the homeless, save a third world nation all by yourself while ending the AIDS epidemic and playing Creed songs on twelve stereos and slamming a 5 Hour Energy - none of that would nessesarily tarnish your Satanism as far as I know.
I would say that "traditional" Satanism is more focused on eschatological concerns, but most modern Satanists are philosophically atheisic so eschatology is not a primary concern for them. Modern Satanism a la LaVey tends to use Satan simply as an anti-Christian and anti-theistic metaphor for a more pleasure-seeking lifestyle - kind of like atheists who like to play dress-up, play act, and have fun.
from their website:
"Satan urges us not into a life of mindless abandon and depravity, but asks that we lead fruitful and dignified, epicurean lives. Satan was the force of design that urged humanity toward refined pleasures of the Arts and Sciences. It was He who first brought the fruit of knowledge to Humankind that thereafter we might live not as naked brutes in the wild, but develop our cultural splendor into ever more aesthetically and technologically advanced heights.
Satan sacrificed His own Heavenly residence so that His children — you and I — might live under His benevolent guiding care.
Satanists are often natural aestheticians who revel in the grandeur of human artistic, architectural achievements while also often drawn to the idiosyncratic and bizarre that are all typically misunderstood, feared, and discarded.
With compassion, Satan accepts all who are just and compassionate."

I really get the impression that they try to pass themselves off this way publicly but in private that's not the real story.

That goes a lot closer to what you'd call pure and proper Luciferianism - ie. seeing Lucifer as Prometheus, ie. the poor soul who tested the tyrant, stood up to the bully, gave man either the gift of fire, the gift of knowledge of right and wrong, who essentially freed us from a malevolent force who wanted to keep us stunted mental children for ever.
This is where Illuminism generally comes from - ie. this is Masonic doctrine, the religion of pretty much any of the typical NWO conspirator list, the ancient mystery schools, the undercurrent of Kaballah and Gnosticism (ie. the occultic, ie. hidden knowledge, competitors of Judaism and Christianity), going all the way back to Babylon, Sumeria, and people like Pythagoras and Plato believed that it even came from a period before the 10,500 BC cataclysm and ice age where there was believed to be an advanced society to rival or even surpass ours which was destroyed (ie. the Genesis 6 story).

Well, no, there are different varieties of Satanists and I am personally acquainted with those who affiliate with the Church of Satan which represents most modern "Satanists" in the United States. They are clearly just atheists who use the symbol of Satan to thumb their noses at the mainstream Christian establishment. Really they talk about "occultism" but it is all show and glitz.
There are other smaller varieties, however, like the Luciferians that you mentioned.
Herbert Arthur Sloane organized and led a specifically Satanic religious group called the Ophite Cultus Sathanas (or Satanas) in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1948. He also identified Satan with the Serpent in the Bible account of Genesis. The group was heavily influenced by gnosticism, and worshiped Satanas, their name for Satan (Cultus Satanas is a Latin version of Cult of Satan). Satanas (or Satan) was defined in gnostic terms as the Serpent in the Garden of Eden who revealed the knowledge of the true God to Eve. That it called itself "Ophite" is a reference to the ancient gnostic sect of the Ophites, who were said to worship the serpent. This is clearly Luciferian in emphasis.
This newer Satanic Temple would seem to have some consistencies with the Ophite Cultus Satanas in terms of beliefs.
Here's another great quote!
"Mission Statement:
The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people. In addition, we embrace practical common sense. The King of Hell wants all of us to be guided by our conscience and to undertake noble pursuits guided by compassion and wisdom. We believe that this is the hope of all mankind and the highest aspiration of humanity. May we all be consumed by the inspiration and guidance of Satan to fulfill our noble destiny.
Hail Satan!"

You might know more satanists than self-avowed Luciferians but I'm still doubtful about which is the larger., particularly when you count the number of masonic lodges and affiliate organizations. They're much more highbrow, see Satanists as their trailer-trash cousins, and the things they tend to get behind or put their efforts into are significantly different in depth, scope, and patience.

That version of Satanism sounds far more appealing than the Ayn Rand ripoff stuff in the Lavey version.
True, but as an inactive 32nd degree Scottish Rite and Master Mason, I can tell you that the vast majority of Masons are ignorant of any such "Luciferian" (aka Illuminism) ties and do not delve into the esoteric roots of their own rituals and degrees. More often than not, Freemasonry has become simply a fraternal social club, like the Elks and Moose, which appeals mostly to the over 60 crowd which sponsors various charitable efforts and has monthly or weekly dinners. The only difference is that their business meetings are a little more formalized (although they still follow Robert's Rules of Order) and the other "degrees" serve as membership initiation rites much like the college fraternities.
It was only things like "The Da Vinci Code" which revived interest in the esoteric roots and teachings of Freemasonry - and that was among the younger generations. Mostly they do not find their needs met in mainstream Masonic lodges. I am currently inactive in the Grand Lodge of California, but I am exploring the Grand Orient of the United States as a possible alternative as they just chartered a new lodge in my area.

This makes me want to read some Manley P Hall. I'm curious, in his time, just how much or how little the esoteric cascaded down. Aleister Crowley set up a whole bunch of OTO as well, I'm not sure if they're still around but, lol, there's a guy who pulled no punches. He also makes the tie to new age undeniable - ie. the invocations to Horus and getting channelings from that circle.
Ask and ye shall receive:

“The true name of Satan, the Kabalists say, is that of Yahveh reversed; for Satan is not a black God, but the negation of God. The Devil is the personification of Atheism or Idolatry. For the Initiates, this is not a person, but a force, created for good, but which may serve for evil. It is the instrument of Liberty or free will. They represent this Force, which presides over the physical generation, under the mythologic and horned form of the God Pan; thence the he-goat of the Sabbat, brother of the Ancient Serpent, and the light bearer or Phosphor, of which the poets have made the false Lucifer of the legend.” ~ Albert Pike “Morals and Dogma”, Ancient and Accepted Rite of Free Masonry written and published in 1871
