Until last year, Megan Phelps-Roper was famous as one of the faces of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), frequently seen yelling anti-gay or anti-Jewish slogans at the funerals of dead servicemen, and then repeating them on Twitter to her 10,000-plus followers. Since the infamous church’s first such protest in 1991, the 27-year-old has carried a “God Hates Fags” placard to 44 states and around 240 cities across the US.

Now, however, she has crossed the picket line. Ms Phelps-Roper, the granddaughter of founder Reverend Fred Phelps, was once described as the “future leader” of the church. But she and her 19-year-old sister, Grace, confirmed this week that they had departed the Kansas-based congregation in November. Megan was responsible for the church’s social media presence, and chose to announce her defection with her sister in a post on the blogging platform Medium on Wednesday.

“Up until now, our names have been synonymous with ‘God Hates Fags’,” she wrote, referring to the slogan brandished by the family at its protests. “We know that we’ve done and said things that hurt people. Inflicting pain on others wasn’t the goal, but it was one of the outcomes. We wish it weren’t so and regret that hurt.”

Not really a massive surprise, but I thought this was worth posting.

That's crazy stuff. I wonder if they can find social support as they're basically leaving a cult.

What a pleasant surprise. I've always felt she and her sister were going to eventually quit the church. They seemed too likable to stay for life in it.

I'm actually very surprised Megan Phelps-Roper dropped from the church, as she was, as stated, the public face of the church. I wonder what made her see the light.

Agreed. In one interview I saw with her, it seemed that she was too aware of the cognitive dissonance and hatred involved in being a part of the church to last forever. They have other family members who have left - hopefully, they can re-acquaint and land on their feet.

I don't know if that's a good thing. I like those clowns, they give me reasons to laugh.

Anyway, as some people say, "live your life in a way that the westboro church would picket your funeral." In that perspective I must say I would be honored to be out of my body watching these bozos picketing my funeral. The only downside is the stress it would cause my family and friends.

All religious up-bringing is "brain washing" to one extent or another. Some religions practice brain washing in such a way as all intelligence is bleached out of the brains they wash.
