This has been stuck in my head. I am not evangelical but have been bringing my son to a sunday school at an evangelical church; I drop him off at the sunday school part and then go sit in the service, inconspicuously way in the back off to the side. Well anyway, the pastor on sunday said that "one day Osama Bin Laden will bow down before the throne of Jesus."

I don't like to judge other people's faith, but isn't this a bit extreme?

Well, according to their faith everyone effectively does when they supposedly have all truths revealed to them after death and find out that their god is the true god. I think they were talking about judgment. My thought; its a little extreme to actually point blank say it but oh well, not like that guy or gal is going to run into a mosque with a bomb strapped to em.

Perhaps he meant that Bin Laden would bow before a Hispanic US soldier named Jesus?

You know, there's a thought as well. Or if he ends up in a federal prison that whole scenario could get a lot steamier.

Actually, if that was the case, the preacher would have said OBL would bend over before Bubba.

I'm guessing he'd probably prefer both but us actually catching him and getting him in prison is probably more than he can hope for (then again from the sound of things we may be trying to catch a dead guy).

Seriously, I do think that the statement is a bit extreme, though many Christian denominations believe that there will be an opportunity for non-believers to convert in the afterlife. To some extent, this may be a comforting thought for a child that is worried that grandma or someone won't go to heaven because they were in the "correct" faith.

I'd hope so, if god's real you'd think salvation would only be fair if you could make your choice with all the facts to work with rather than just a wild guess based on what you were raised to believe or the luck of the draw based on the intelligence or morality level of the particular believers in your life.

May I ask why you are bringing your son there?

BTW, I asked Jesus...

http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 783#394783

Q: Will Osama Bin Laden bow down and worship you?

A: Let me ask my dad

There's another thing (I, at least) find wrong with the Christian faith: 9 times outta 10, the belief is held that any non-Christians cannot get into heaven. I don't really understand where this came from , because it has nothing to fo with any Jewish beliefs I know of...

But yeah, being elitist and exclusive like that, I'm not surprised they spread so quickly. "Be a Christian, or burn in the fiery pit for all eternity!"

I once asked my uncle (a Catholic priest) if someone born in a forest, with no other people around and no person to learn from, but who still lived a "good life" by Christian standards, would be able to go to heaven. He tried to answer, but his answers were all dodgy and didn't really address the question. In the end, the answer was basically "The Church says no, but you don't have to think that."

To make another interesting point, Islam doesn't hold that belief. According to what I've seen of Islam, they believe that if a person never has any way of learning about Allah, but still lives a good life, he or she can still go to heaven.

I think it's all a little ridiculous, so I'll stay here in my comfortable grey spot. It's a little confusing in here, but at least it's not hypocritical.

CellachSolomon: How long ago did you ask your uncle that? I know that the Catholic church used to be exclusive like that, but I thought that they had lightened up in recent years.

I asked him less than a year ago. I really wish it wasn't true, because that's no way to teach people about "acceptance" and "free thought", but then again, the church has never been very big on those things...

She's a witch! BURN HER AT THE STAKE! *charges*

The Pastor is probably referring to Philippians 2:9-11. " Wherefore God hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth, and things under the earth: And that every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
