Israeli citizens are leaving Israel complaining about not being looked after, and are retreating to Germany, the same country they were persecuted. Suggests that if this is the case, then Israel under its existing guise is losing relevance.

Haaretz wrote:
"It's painful that artists can't make a living in Israel and that there isn't enough respect for culture and art there," according to one Israeli at the party. "When Israel was more socialist, it was shameful to leave the country. But nowadays, when the state doesn't take care of its citizens, they have no choice but to leave. The fact that so many artists are leaving should be a wake-up call for the country."

Nati Ornan, 36, an actor, writer and performer who moved here in November 2010, says, "Now there are more Israeli artists in Berlin than in Israel. I think this is like the proverbial destruction of the Third Temple - the destruction of the Jewish spirit, which was gradually decaying until the current [social and economic] revolution, which has begun to lift it.

Sometimes, it is good to get out of one's home country, and get a new perspective on life.

If they're leaving just because they're not being looked after enough then it will be no great loss for Israel.

Ironic considering Adolf was an artist himself.

Why won't Israel have any "cultural productivity"? I'm not sure what that even means. "Artists" that can't stand on their two feet with their work but expect to be supported are the very height of pretentiousness. Petulant spoiled babies, how is their "art" any different than mine or any else that does it as a hobby? Why should some factory worker or teacher or whoever be forced to support them? There are some very technically talented people out there in whatever their medium is but there is no threshold besides the market economy. What do they produce that won't be produced otherwise?

Nonsense. The Nazis promoted art. Bad art.

If a few Israelis are annoyed at not getting government support, by all means they should go to where they think they will make out better.

Governments should not be in the business of subsidizing art anyway.

http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/wpa/wpa_info.html

Quote:
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was a relief measure established in 1935 by executive order as the Works Progress Administration.....

Particularly novel were the special programs. The Federal Writers' Project (more information available from Indiana State University's library) prepared state and regional guide books, organized archives, indexed newspapers, and conducted useful sociological and historical investigations. The Federal Arts Project gave unemployed artists the opportunity to decorate hundreds of post offices, schools, and other public buildings with murals, canvases, and sculptures; musicians organized symphony orchestras and community singing.(video clip, 493k) The Federal Theatre Project experimented with untried modes, and scores of stock companies toured the country with repertories of old and new plays, thus bringing drama to communities where it had been known only through the radio....

I would much rather see money going to support activities such as these than to support our ridiculous and greedy military-industrial complex and all of its parasitic contractors.

Who's turn was it to bring the troll spray today?

I don't think he's trolling, that's probably a heartfelt belief. I don't want to pay people to dig ditches or play flutes in the park obviously but I agree that it is small potatoes compared to our reprehensible military imperialism abroad and our growing police state at home under the guise of "homeland security." While cuts to social programs/welfare are unavoidable, they should certainly come after the most immoral parts of government.

Israel's economic strength is its technological talent. Israel has one the highest rates a patent production per capita of any country in the world.

By the way, that USB you plugged into your computer was invented by an Israeli.

America leads the world in the production of pizza and movies. Israel is a world leader in technological invention.

Israel does get a lot of tourists. I wonder if they've thought of selling art in tourist shops? Depictions of Jesus at some of the sites ought to sell well. Maybe replicas of artifacts, or bones of a saint. The trouble is, it is a lot cheaper to import that stuff from China than to employ local artists and craftsmen.

i think Robin Williams put it best in the movie 'the dead poets society'.

"Science, technology medicine etc. are all noble pursuits. They enable us to live. The arts give us a reason to live".

I didn't name an individual.
To do so would be a personal attack and we can't have that, now........
