Local election 2013: Ken Clarke brands UKIP 'clowns'

Veteran Tory Ken Clarke has waded into his party's war of words with UKIP by branding them "a collection of clowns".

The pro-European cabinet minister said UKIP had no positive policies and was just "against" foreigners.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage hit back by accusing Mr Clarke of holding millions of British people "in utter contempt".

Thank you very much, Ken.

Thank you for calling myself, anyone who votes UKIP, anyone who is considering voting UKIP, and anyone who has any sympathy with UKIP in the Conservative Party "clowns". It's much appreciated.

Thank you for the extra coming votes from people who are disgusted by your contempt of their views.

Thank you for hastening the alienation within the Conservative Party itself.

Thank you for acting as unpaid researchers of our council candidates. You're doing our work for us and saving us money into the bargain.

Thank you for acting like a spoilt child rather than a proper adult.

Thank you for being the pin-up boy for a failed eurozone currency, and a failed EU. The public will remember that you wanted Britain to join the euro, even as we see it in its death throes.

Above all, thank you for all your compliments. They do us a world of good.

I think a spot of leafleting is in order today. The candidate I am leafleting for is ex-Tory. He has no other resources, but we do what we can.

The response that I've seen from local Tories has been acrimonious and hilarious in equal measure.

The Tories really don't like us. What an awful shame.

We're coming...
