Why did Yahweh hate Esau?
In Romans 9

Paul is trying to make the point that Yahweh decides whom he will love and whom he will hate based upon shere whimsy.
As one of his supporting points, Paul states
Paul wrote:
As the scripture says, “I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau.”
Paul might have been reading Malachi prior to writing his letter to the Romans.
Malachi 1 wrote:
The Lord says to his people, “I have always loved you.”
But they reply, “How have you shown your love for us?”
The Lord answers, “Esau and Jacob were brothers, but I have loved Jacob and his descendants, and have hated Esau and his descendants. I have devastated Esau's hill country and abandoned the land to jackals.”
If Esau's descendants, the Edomites, say, “Our towns have been destroyed, but we will rebuild them,” then the Lord will reply, “Let them rebuild—I will tear them down again. People will call them ‘The evil country’ and ‘The nation with whom the Lord is angry forever.’”
But they reply, “How have you shown your love for us?”

So, okay, the Israelites had it in for the Edomites, and attributed a terrible attitude towards them on the part of Yahweh.
Did Yahweh actually hate Esau? If so, why? Divine whim?
Or divine wisdom beyond human comprehension, of course ![]()

Esau was born before Jacob therefore had the birthright to be in a covenant marriage relationship with God, to be the chosen ones of God, to give birth to the Messiah, to rule over the whole Earth as Gods representatives, but he deemed a bowl of soup to be of greater worth by swapping his birthright to his younger Brother Jacob for it.
I would imagine God would be quite offended to offer a man so much and have him turn it down for a bowl of soup instead.

I was under the impression that you were an atheist......

That's pretty much what I've heard some theologians say. Most don't seem to even address the issue.

So?
Then it would be a moot point and starting a topic like that could be considered +r011ing

You're going to get in trouble, for overuse of the t-word.
Moreover, that does not make the point moot, as I am not arguing the nonexistence of God.
The Bible still has a story line. One does not have to be a theist in order to read the Bible and follow the story line.

Show me where there's a T in +r011.
At best it could legally only be defined as a corrupted binary code.
Good luck.

What is this "covenant marriage relationship with God?"
You will have to read through the old Testament, I cannot remember where the spicific scriptures are, here though are a few other scriptures to show God likened his relationship to the Israelies as a man to his wife. (Bare in mind the word Harlot tended to be used to describe a woman who was unfaithfull to her husband).
Maybe if you are more familiar with the New Tetsament you will know about "the Bride of Christ", it is a similar thing.
-------------------------------------------------------
When the LORD first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to him, "Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the LORD and worshiping other gods."
------------------------------------------------------
And the LORD said to Moses: "You are going to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them.
--------------------------------------------------------
"If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers-- would you now return to me?" declares the LORD
------------------------------------------------------------
They became prostitutes in Egypt, engaging in prostitution from their youth. In that land their breasts were fondled and their virgin bosoms caressed.
------------------------------------------------------------
There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. (In fact the whole of Ezekiel 23 is worth a read:- LINK)

Now, go and read up on Esau, and come back with an actual contribution to the discussion, or I might throw some corrupted binary code in YOUR direction.

Why would it have to be one or the other? Since they were twins, why not both? After all, Jacob's sons all got to be patriarchs.
The story line suggests that Jacob got what he got through trickery and fraud, and was not exactly legitimate.
Anyway, regarding Esau's purported descendents, the Edomites, a.k.a. the Idumaeans:
Wikipedia wrote:
During the revolt of the Maccabees against the Seleucid kingdom (early 2nd century BE), II Maccabees refers to a Seleucid general named Gorgias as "Governor of Idumaea"; whether he was a Greek or a Hellenized Edomite is unknown. Some scholars maintain that the reference to Idumaea in that passage is an error altogether. Judas Maccabeus conquered their territory for a time in around 163 BC. They were again subdued by John Hyrcanus (c. 125 BC), who forcibly converted them to Judaism and incorporated them into the Jewish nation,
From 125 BC onwards, the Edomites were Jews. The purported descendents of Esau and the Jews were one. And, the descendents of the Kingdom of Israel became the Samaritans, with whom the Jews did not get along terribly well.
Deuteronomy 23 wrote:
Do not despise the Edomites; they are your relatives. And do not despise the Egyptians; you once lived in their land.
Malachi would seem to have been out of line in placing the words "“Esau and Jacob were brothers, but I have loved Jacob and his descendants, and have hated Esau and his descendants" into Yahweh's mouth.
For Paul, it wouldn't have made sense to quote the whole passage from Malachi, as the purported descendants of Esau had become Jews. But, Paul was still out of line in declaring that Yahweh loved Jacob, but hated Esau.
