Nope. I'm an atheist, and I put zero effort into being a true christian. I do, however, put a lot of effort into being a good man. Sad thing is that I end up being a better Christian than a lot of Christians as a result. I just keep getting hung up on the damn modesty thing... 
If you think that the Bible is a good guide, then more power to you. Just don't be like a lot of Christians. Many have a tendency to be insufferable douches, especially born-agains. Just be a good person.

What "Christians" have you been talking to? Doesn't sound much like anything I've heard in my mainline church. Especially praying back amputated limbs.

Thanks for taking the topic seriously. That's unfortunately rare on WP in PPR when the topic is religion.
In my experience, "strive" is a fairly normal word for it, and I'm not Catholic. I think every flavor of Christianity has a different take on the faith/works thing, but pretty much everyone agrees that they're like two scissor blades -- you can't have one without the other. The thing we disagree on is which one is more important.
There's a relevant Bible quote (that most Christians probably recognize) and something C. S. Lewis said that was relevant. I'm too lazy to look either of them up now, but if people want to discuss it, I might.
