Do you mean to suggest a correlation between psychopathy and laughing at a youtube video of someone falling off a skateboard?

I think on some level most people enjoy it. Not because of some sadistic pleasure, but because then they can say "Glad that wasn't me! I'd never be that dumb!"

Nah, it is just sadism.

It gives them a sexual thrill.

such garden variety petty quasi-sadists are merely savage elemental souls early in their spiritual evolution. they have not been hurt enough by life to yet get a clue.

Perhaps some are sadistic, but the vast majority do not get a hard-on. They watch in order to distance themselves from such injuries. It gives them a sense of security.

the people who derive security from witnessing others' misfortunes, are deluding themselves.

I agree, but it's the psychology of the matter. If I can find one of the many studies that illustrates what I'm saying, I will post it.

It's not just accidents, though. A huge part of watching sports like MMA/cage fighting/boxing/ etc, and football or hockey, is about watching people hurt each other. I REALLY don't get that.

I think Seneca has humanity dead to rights...

Quote:
But nothing is so damaging to good character as the habit of lounging at the games; for then it is that vice steals subtly upon one through the avenue of pleasure. What do you think I mean? I mean that I come home more greedy, more ambitious, more voluptuous, and even more cruel and inhuman,-because I have been among human beings. By chance I attended a mid-day exhibition, expecting some fun, wit, and relaxation,-and exhibition at which men's eyes have respite from the slaughter of their fellow-men. But is was quite the reverse. The previous combats were the essence of compassion; but now all the trifling is put aside and it is pure murder. The men have no defensive armour. They are exposed to blows at all points, and no one ever strikes in vain. Many persons prefer this programme to the usual pairs and to the bouts "by request." Of course they do; there is no helmet or shield to deflect the weapon. What is the need of defensive armour, or of skill? All these mean delaying death. In the morning they throw men to the lions and the bears; at noon, they throw them to the spectators. The spectators demand that the slayer shall face the man who is to slay him in his turn; and they always reserve the latest conqueror for another butchering. The outcome of every fight is death, and the means are fire and sword. This sort of things goes on while the arena is empty. You may retort: "But he was a highway robber; he killed a man!" And what of it? Granted that, as a murderer, he deserved this punishment, what crime have you committed, poor fellow, that you should deserve to sit and see this show? In the morning they cried "Kill him! Lash him! Burn him! Why does he meet the sword in so cowardly, a way? Why does he strike so feebly? Why doesn't he die game? Whip him to meet his wounds! Let them receive blow for blow, with chests bare and exposed to the stroke!" And when the games stop for the intermission, they announce: "A little throat-cutting in the meantime, so that there may still be something going on!"

The only thing I've managed to find so far are forum topics similar to this one. I'm not exactly a google wizard... lol Ah well, I'm off for a nap. Perhaps I'll find it later.

I don't get it. I've never found it amusing for anyone to ever get hurt. Maybe this is denial, maybe I'm deluding myself. I don't understand this mechanism. When I see someone tripping up ridiculously, my first reaction has always been to see if they are okay.

As far as I can tell, there are not seven billion psychopaths in the world. I used to, in the dark days of high school, adhere to that misanthropic philosophy under the naive assumption I was "standing up for myself." Newsflash: it doesn't work that way. If humans are so evil and selfish, as some wholeheartedly believe, how would we have made it out of the caves? Think about that for a second.

A lot of British humor seems to involve people being humiliated, and I don't get that, either.
