Should movie theaters, schools, malls, stores, restaurants and banks have metal detectors at the entrance for security?

... and people with those new 3D printed plastic guns, ceramic guns or explosives can walk straight through the metal detectors anyway. Rendering such metal detectors a waste of time and a great deal of inconvenience for everyone.

They are a real pain if you are a Cylon.

Yes, and there should be Army soldiers in them, too. And a turret to shoot shoplifters.

Guns will always set off metal detectors. Though I agree with the general sentiment.

In the Philippines, you have to go through as much security to enter a shopping mall as you do to enter an airplane in the USA.

Banks have heavily armed guards to greet you at the door.



As do pawn shops




And a lot of other stores


They seem to be almost as crazed about guns as their former colonial masters.

In most cases, it won't make a difference. If someone wants to shoot up a cinema or a restaurant, they'll just barge or shoot their way through security.

Over here, we have a few problem schools where the pupils are searched in the mornings, airport-style, because there were too many incidents of teachers being threatened with knives. That sort of treatment just tends to rile people up.

So two things:
1) Any sort of security needs the firepower to back itself up, or it is useless
2) Heavy security tends to make people angry

and I guess you also have to look at the expense.

I think most people would choose to sacrifice their security in order to pass about without being hassled unnecessarily by security forces.

I would submit that it's not the heft of the security that matters, but rather the intrusiveness. Airport security is incredibly intrusive, and at the same time largely ineffective.

Amtrak security is completely the opposite - it is very unobtrusive, and at the same time extremely effective.

When I said heavy, I meant intrusive, not effective. I understand how using the word "heavy" after talking about firepower could have been confusing.

When I was in St.Louis quite a few stores had armed security guards.Even one grocery store.
I didn't see any in the stores in San Fransisco.No stores here have them.

That is due, at least in part, to the licensing and insurance requirements for armed security guards. Missouri has relatively lax rules on armed security, which makes them cheaper to employ. San Francisco's requirements for private armed security surpass the requirements for the police department, which is a pretty blatant attempt to dissuade businesses from hiring armed guards.

^^^That figures.There was a truck dealership in Mo giving away free AK's with a vehicle purchase.There is a shooting range outside Springfield in Buseick State park right off hwy 65.There is a rock bluff so it's safe,but their is also a picnic area,it just seems funny.Mom and the kids picnic and wade in the creek while dad fires off a few rounds.For awhile someone was sniping at vehicle along that stretch of road,none got shot but a few vehicle got bullet holes.They never caught the person.Murder Rocks is in that area where a outlaw named Bolin used to shoot at Yankees.
