So. What is it, then? The fact that gallup polls are completely unreliable? Institutionalized sexism? A biological drive to follow strong men? One honestly hopes it's the former two. I'd also be curious to see what sort of results you'd get in say....Sweden, and whether or not there's any differentiation between the ages of women. I would suspect younger women would be more pliable to working under other women.

All supervisors tend to be nasty, whether male or female. Overall, I've generally found the female variety to be much more dangerous. They'll actually go to the effort to end someone's career, whereas the male supervisor is usually content with just making someone grovel.

The male supervisor is more likely to want the female employees to be on their knees groveling under his desk.

Tis just an anecdote, but the best boss I ever had was a woman. She really worked with staff over issues and tried to give us an environment where we could succeed in our own ways, rather than 'laying down the law' or being punitive; as a result, she had some of the best employee retention of any laboratory in the county and some of the most skilled, most highly trained staff. She acted as a facilitator to help us do our jobs by helping patients, rather than as an overseer cracking the whip.

Oh they would do more than grovelling under that desk.

The article from the OP isn't very good at presenting the key points of the Gallup poll.

The interesting result isn't just that women prefer male bosses compared to female bosses (40 vs. 27 percent).

What is also interesting is than men prefer male bosses to a much lesser extent (29 percent) than women, and a small majority (51 percent) of men have no gender preferences at all.

And what is really interesting can be seen in the table below. Of all the groupings in the poll, the best predictor of gender-blind boss preference is... being a man.

(Note, however, that the difference between percentages across groups is likely to be statistically insignificant due to sampling error.)
