I've got a load of questions like this in my head, will have to roll them out.

I was reading a sci fi book recently and in it there's mention that prostitution had died out due to some kind of hi tech virtual reality that made it obsolete.

And it made me think. This WILL happen. Some things are debatable, maybe the details, but this is going to happen sooner or later. There's a demand for it so it will happen, simple.

Basically, technology will take us to a place, sooner or later, where fully immersive porn will exist. It will take us to a point where any guy can have sex whenever they want, with girls that look like supermodels, with multiple girls, with whatever, as and when they feel like it.

I'm old enough to have seen first hand the way technology can completely change the way things work. As an example, you had to be a complete geek to use the internet when it first came out, whereas today everyone has a little bit of a geek in them because almost everyone uses computers these days. Things change every day but every now and then we get technological developments that completely break things only for a new world order to form and take it's place.

Guys won't be wanting sex but girls will always want relationships and babies. Will women find that they're the ones chasing males? With their main source of power gone, will they be forced to develop other ways of attracting mates? What do people think?

A possible dilemma for a couple of decades time.
I'm guessing this won't really apply in developing nations so there will be plenty of men for women to pick from there.

In 100+ years? It will be a eugenicists' utopia as only the best of the best (men and women) will want to form meaningful relationships and/or procreate. By then though this problem might be entirely irrelevant and everyone might be "made" rather than "born". So the only people it would affect are those who prefer natural sex or to naturally conceive.

Sounds like a good world to me except the human race might die out. It probably wouldn't. Men don't just get in relationships for sex. Some want an actual partner and kids. Not all women want kids either.

If good virtual reality existed and I could get it I'd almost never come out of it. Not for sex though, I have no interest in sex. Maybe when I was younger I would have.

There are two human activities that are truly aesthetic--in other words, activities that engage all of our senses--eating and sex. And it stands to reason that our senses would evolve to maximize our ability to nourish ourselves and to reproduce.

So there's the challenge for any immersive porn developer: how do you simulate the touch, smell and taste of sex with another person in the simulation? I suspect that any attempt to get to high levels of realism is going to get costed well out of the market, when compared with the cost of going out and buying a few rounds of drinks or paying a sex worker.

Can it happen? I don't doubt it--engineering challenges will be overcome. But will it supplant sex? I think not.

the technologies already exist to make this a reality. The main hurdle is politics or social taboos, not technology. The creators of 3d peripherals don't want their company image to be sullied by being associated with the sort of companies that create sexually orientated peripherals. Its a shame really. Its one of the necessary components of creating a truly consequence free, pleasurable virtual environment.

the 'touch' sense is already covered (from the waist down at least). I won't provide links due to the inherent nature, but if you're curious google a device called 'realtouch'. If someone could work out a way to combine this with Oculus Rift, you won't see me on Wrong Planet very much.

People will always want the real thing and will pay a premium for it if they have to.

Theres that side to it. Some men just want the feeling of empowerment over other people rather than anything else.

You're making the mistake on focusing one particular aspect of touch sensitivity. What about the feeling of another person's skin under your hand? What about the touch of another person's tongue--whether in your mouth, or on some other part of your body? Your fingers in your partner's hair? Your partner's hands on your body? Start to add these together, and this device is simply a means to an end.

There's far more to sex than penetration and orgasm.

I think it will be a long time before virtual reality can replicate real sex.

that in itself is a technological holy grail. I do think it will be countered one day. Probably not through brain add ons that allow us to 'jack into' a matrix style internet but probably something along the lines of a carbon fibre catsuit with digitally sensitive panels that create pressure on specific parts of the body. Give it ten years someone will work it out.

Sexbots exist, in Japan of course, also robot maids, that will go get you a beer, your slippers, and like a Webbot, can speak, reply, and are getting close to being undetectable.

A set personality, knowledge base, and self awareness are not far behind.

The perfect housewife, keeps it spotless, keeps me well fed, and interacts on demand.

The better part, when not needed goes into their recharge closet.

Aside from a humanized domestic model, an intellect assistant, who looks up things, does calculations, and can clamp things together till the glue sets. A small tablet with insect legs, that can remove splinters, something in your eye, stop bleeding, even place stiches, and be self tooled to work in micro places. You interact with it through screen display, or glasses, with an ear piece.

The better part of one that understands me, is it can have others, without my meatbag limits. It can have Replicators, Fabricators, and they can have self awareness as members of a group. Once it gets past production of standard parts, design for function, and starts evolving, it no longer needs the meatbag.

Meatbags can learn, some more, but once learning becomes a machine, self developing, the process will speed up.

The computer that wins at chess is just the start.

2020, Talk To Me Bear is the hottest toy for young girls, and fifteen years later they are demanding the right to marry their bear. It always knew just what to say and do to make her happy.

Too late to turn back now.
