Mormons are among the friendliest people in the world, so I don't mind them even though Joseph Smith probably made it all up. I also think Joseph Smith's stories were well intended--even though I doubt they ever happened.

Thats how Mitt Romney spent his youth.

He did it in France, and actually made like 100 converts among the French people he bothered while knocking on doors (as I recall from the bio show I saw on TV during the election.).

As far as I'm aware though, Mormonism isn't a cult. Unlike certain other heretics...

I strongly object to this, especially the title. Not only are Mormons nice people, but I have found that they observe a far higher ethical standard than most people do. They are also very well educated as a demographic class, as well as higher income. Obviously, each individual Mormon has faults, and I obviously do not share their religious beliefs. But they are good people overall, and are net contributors to society.

And I NEVER criticize anyone's faith, no matter how repulsive I find it. Faith is not just part of who you are, but how you structure your values in this world.

I think some of the animosity towards Mormons might be due to their door-to-door approach, mostly. John Safran illustrated it in no uncertain terms.

Point is, I do not like (1) people proselytizing their religious beliefs to me and (2) people showing up at my home unannounced.

Groups like Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses do *both* at the same time.

Mormons are nice people, the experiences I've had with their missionaries have all been positive. While I don't agree with all their beliefs, I don't find them any weirder or cultish than most other religions.

Your absolutely right. Unfortunately Wrong Planet does little to discourage Hate Speech as that's exactly the intention this thread. More proof folks with AS can be bigots as much as any NT....

I'm not a Mormon, but wild attacks on Mormons, blacks, jews, or whatever group based upon a posters personal bigotry....especially on this part of the forum makes those with autism look bad every day.

I'm sure Alex's intention was not to encourage hate, bigotry, or ignorance when he set up Wrong Planet...but that's what he got, as this is the internet. Other parts of the forum are so much more reasoned, but the wild displays of bias, racism, bigotry and outright hate on the Politics, Philosophy, and Religion section makes this the least relevant part of our site. (Unless the relevant point is to make those with AS look bad.)

I don't want to sound like a grumpy old man, but you could have some Mormon kid, just coming here with AS and to have him get turned away because of hate threads like this is irresponsible, immoral and without honor. This is a vile thread, and a bad reflection on all of us.

They are "nice people," but can sometimes be deceptively so.

If you ever have the displeasure of having to work with a Mormon who is actually miserable underneath the fake smile, RUN. A person like that will smile until it hurts, but all they're thinking about is how miserable they'd rather YOU be. And it shows. I have to wonder how much Xanax people like that have to take before they can get past their own front door every morning.

I realize there are miserable people everywhere, so don't misunderstand me. But it's that whole "happy, happy, joy, joy" mentality that messes with your head when you have to interact with someone who is unhappy and in over their heads and yet feel some sort of pressure to just keep on smiling.

Yes, I had a pretty rough experience with a very, VERY unhappy Mormon--which was so strange because the other Mormons I knew were so nice.

But we used to hire this lady, who was a stay-at-home mom at the time, to babysit our children so we could cut some of the costs by avoiding daycare. Things were fine for a while, but we figured out from our son's odd behavior that she'd just prop him up in a corner on the couch and just leave him there all day. So every time we'd try to put him on the couch, he'd totally freak out. We eventually got a better deal with another babysitter and cut Krazy loose.

Anyway, she was married to a local worship leader at a church, so even though she wasn't really a preacher's wife, she totally had the act down. Constant, unending smiling, hugs for everyone, and everything is so wonderful and it's such a beautiful day and roses and daisies and crap like that. But, I mean, there was just something hateful in her eyes. It's hard to explain, but it was like she had pure misery written all over her face.

People like that don't want people to know how miserable they are, especially if being who or what they are is supposed to mean something. If you're wealthy, it's because God blessed you…so why am I so unhappy? And why don't people like me? People are supposed to like me, doggone it! That's what it says right here in the Bible or Book of Mormon or whatever. You're either going to make me the center of your attention or I'm taking you DOWN, buddy!

And that's exactly what happened to me and my family. Krazy babysitter preacher-wife chick called CPS on us saying we were denying our son medical attention, the mother is depressed because she's scared her newborn premie might die of SIDS, and I'm suicidal. Er…HUH???

Come to find out two things were going on, besides Krazy being crazy. 1) My wife and I had genuinely fallen on hard times, so we were getting a lot of attention from close friends and well-wishers between the birth of our daughter and the end of her stay in the NICU after three weeks. So she's not just crazy; she's jealous that someone else is in the spotlight. 2) Pulling our son and subsequently our daughter out of her care meant she had to *gasp* get a "real job" to support her family and, *gasp* put her twin boys in preschool. OK, so compare that with TWO people who are out of work and struggling to make $1000 house payments on no income. We have nothing, you have everything, and you're jealous of US? Since when was this a contest to see whose life sucked the most?

We pulled through and ended up just fine…she and her husband moved two states over to bring misery to someone else's congregation. My wife and are are religious (non-Mormon, btw) and enjoy being active in church. Sure, we have a lot to smile about, and we do smile and laugh probably more than most. But, y'know, we have bad days, too. And if I don't feel like smiling, I'm not going to neurotically fake some super-emotion that doesn't exist! If you're genuinely happy, AWESOME. Smile until your face falls off. I don't care. But don't be all "Isn't life GRAAAAAAAAAANNNDDD?! !??! !" if all you're thinking is how much everyone sucks compared to you. It doesn't take people long to see through that. If you're all glum and noticeably moody, I'll give you a hug and love you anyway. You don't have to pretend around me.

It seems to me that certain religious people are prone to that kind of thing--putting on an act and hating every minute of it. It looks to me like Mormonism breeds that kind of thing.

Among the young "elders" you will not see many zits either. It must be the Mormon dietary restrictions.

Few people do more for philanthropic causes than the mormons, so Joseph Smith still changed humanity for the better.

I will suggest the movie "Orgazmo" by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
A very humorous jab at young mormons.

That said, Mormonism is non-existent here in the UK, and Jehovah's Witnesses haven't been around here in years. If they came round now, I'd probably freak out.

I agree that Mormons are nice people. However, faith needs to be criticized. I respect people but not religions. If faith produces nice people, the corollary of that is the faith that burns people alive for witchcraft. It all the same disease.

I just want to add that bigotry only exists for one's immutable traits, like race or sex. One's adopted ideology is fair game.
