Why do people care so much? Why is there so much argument by people as to why there exists a God, or why there doesn't exist a God? Why do people care that much about proving or disproving that there's a God?

- Because there is a tendency for religious individuals to impose their religious views on politics
- Because there is a tendency for religious individuals to impose their religious views on science

If such tendencies did not exist, then I'm sure the entire topic would be rather boring, and that a lot of people would simply not care...

When I was a young kid it struck me as very important to know why I existed, was there any reason for it. Is there a god etc. The obsession with knowing the nature of reality has lasted my entire life. My quest has led me to religions, western and eastern and also to the sciences.

In addition to the thoughts expressed above, if a being has the power to give you an eternity of bliss/suffering, then it is worth following his rules, no matter how crazy. If that being doesn't exist, you don't need to follow those rules if you disagree.

Why did we discover fire, the wheel and all that other funky stuff that helped us shape the world around us?

You don't need to attack the idea of God to attack moral problems with religion. The idea of God in itself is irrelevant to most things.

I care because without God, this life has no ultimate source for hope, love, or peace. So many terrible things happen every single day, and the only way I can deal with it is to try and trust that another life exists beyond this one, where perfect justice will be done, and purity will conquer evil permanently.

I dream about it. Therefore, it's true.

Quote:
“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

And if it's false....so what? If nothing matters then nothing matters.

Just because something doesn't matter at a cosmic scale, it doesn't mean it can't matter to me.

Gods and goddesses are human creations intended to explain the unexplainable and comfort people about the uncertainty and ultimate frailty of life. If religious belief comforts people, that's great. The minute it starts being a reason for them to feel or act superior to others, it is no longer religion but bigotry.

Because people have nothing better to do.

There are religious extremists who want to force their beliefs onto everyone, and there are angry atheists who want to sanitize the world of religion.

This ^^

Good answer. Finally somebody that understands the true concept of hope, love, and justice.
