Oh Jesus. I live down here, surrounded by them, and they aren't turning anything into any kind of third world country! I don't agree with most of their opinions, but it's far from a third world country around here.

Overkill much?

The majority of people with that paper's opinion don't even know what poor/poverty is.

OP, you have seemed a little on the hysterical sounding side lately about things. I'm not trying to insult you, but I had to point that out to ask this next question because it's about that. I'm concerned because of how OTT you are sounding on things lately and wondering if you are ok? Sometimes when other things are bothering us, we blow lots of things out of proportion. I'm wondering if that might be going on with you.

It's really hard to get perspective on things sometimes. I really, really understand that. If you want to talk, my PM's are open.

I don't like them. They get my nerves because they only want to spend what they want to spend on and screw everything else. Lately they have sounded a little better criticizing Pentagon spending for a change.

If we look at some key development indicators:

... the Southern US states do indeed tend to be worse off than the US in general.

This may, however, be due to the fact that the Southern states tend to be poorer. This doesn't explain why Texas performs so poorly on these development indicators though, as Texas ranks as the #7 US state when it comes to GDP per capita.

As for the 3rd world country comparison, some Southern US states (Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi) actually have teen pregnancy rates equivalent to 3rd world countries like Zimbabwe, Comoros and Sudan, and rates significantly higher than countries like Rwanda, Haiti and Togo.

It isn't Dallas, or even Little Rock, that looks like it belongs in a Third World country -- it's Detroit.

YES!! ! YES!! ! YES!! !

I live about 9 miles north of Detroit. I can verify this. The southern US has nothing on Detroit or Flint... Don't forget about Flint.

The first job my son had was installing high def cable at the Marriott in Detroit, they got lost trying to find the place and wound up in a sketchy area.Years later he got lost in a part of Little Rock.He said it was worse than Detroit.Little Rock has been one of the most dangerous cities in America for years. If you live in the burbs it's pretty nice, but there are areas where it's not a good idea to be at night.
It's true about teen pregnancy here. And the schools don't have much money so education isn't that good in some rural areas. If you have a special needs child they are not going to get that much help.

Probably because the author mentions guns and gun deaths as the first example of American exceptionality within the first sentence.

Which speaks volumes about the authors politics and mindset in general......

It used to not be like that when corporations were loyal.

I think isolating the description of "third world" to the south was faulty. Every large city in this country has sections where conditions as as bad (or worse) than some of the most poverty stricken nations. America is not becoming a third world nation, just the sections where we condemn and abandon our less fortunate.

I'm not sure I follow, how is Detroit the way it is because of a lack of loyalty by corporations?
