The Uruguay Senate has voted to legalize not only the consumption, but also the production and trade of cannabis/marijuana/hashish (although subject to tight government regulation).

It will be interesting to see if this sets a precedent for other countries to do the same.

The arguments for the legalization in Uruguay are similar to those currently being discussed in my native Country of Denmark (curbing drug-related violence and possibility of regulation).

South America would have a booming economy if drugs were legalized.
