It could be the Mirror's way of reporting it (they are like the tabloid Guardian, after all) but they sound like bad guys in a socially-conscious Victorian novel. Very Scroogelike. Anyone got a video of them laughing? All I can find on Youtube is this 9 second clip. Don't think it would be on BBC iplayer, would it?

Damn. I don't know much about the state of affairs in the UK , but that sounds terrible. How could elected politicians feel secure enough to openly laugh at poverty?

The class system is a bit like that in this country. Still, it shocked me that Members of Parliament could do it so openly - and it takes a lot to shock me.

I was wondering if there was anything funny about the tone of the speech that the Labour MP was giving to cause the Conservatives to snigger, but I can't find a video of it. Even if it was a bit unintentionally funny, you'd expect our elected officials would have more decency, professionalism and even self-interest than to laugh at a serious issue. If there was nothing funny about it, then all the worse - they are scumbags.

Hm. American conservatives for the most part just get preachy about how the poor have to work harder, are spoiled by the "nanny state," or might even suggest that hunger is a great motivator.

I don't know about the majority, as many conservatives would be labelled "poor white trash" by these heartless types, but they have certainly reached positions of power and influence in the conservative movement. After all, Ted Cruz considers his shining moment to have been arguing against aid for poor Texas children.
