Recently I found a very interesting National Geographic movie on youtube

What if Earth ware doomed and only chance to survival is super mega giant nuclear propelled Generation Ship as international effort to save mankind , which contain everything you need to survival, the saddest part is it can carry only 250 thousands people, a only fraction of Earth population.

In my opinion the best part of this movie is 42 minutes, The selection process is based on genetic profiling so only healthiest people ( so probably no apsies, adhd, neurotic or bi-polar :( ) of all races would go. The question is you are not selected, does you would try every effort to sabotage project.

I if i don't go nobody would go :D

I'd stay behind. I'm far too lazy and I'm not keen on flying.

Good luck running such a project when almost everyone you need to pull it off knows that there's no chance that they, or indeed anyone they know, will make it off planet. If you have a couple of years left (which, by the way, is enough lead time to get serious about space launch - by which I mean, drop everything, refocus all industrial production, and let the world burn if we must - and evacuate everyone), would you prefer slaving away so that someone you don't know will survive, or spending them with your loved ones? I know what I'd do - spend them slaving away so that me and my loved ones will survive. Airship to orbit, big dumb boosters, screw the heatshields since we're not going to be returning...

But why would anyone be launching a generation ship? Sun about to go nova several billion years ahead of schedule?

It's a tough question.

When "end of the world" kind of stuff happens, people might amaze you.

Why do mom's and dad's throw themselves in harm's way to protect their kid? Instinct? Love?

If humanity KNEW it was doomed and there was a slim chance of the species surviving, but that meant those who get to go would be a very slim fraction and represent the "best" of us, I'd think most would approve. Frankly, many probably wouldn't handle the trip.

I would also postulate that governments would do the "space ark" idea but never really say that survival of the disaster is hopeless...just problematic, and that the "space ark" was more of an insurance policy should all the earth-based plans fail. This would open up the "hope" (if even false hope) for the masses to have a shot at surviving.

Honestly, a lot of people would probably want to just take a massive dose of sedatives a few hours before the event and sleep right through it...accepting that life has to end sooner or later.

And, for what it's worth. Our best effort to build such a ship would in no way ensure that anyone on board would survive the trip. We know NOTHING of what's beyond the termination shock of our star system, and we worry about interplanetary radiation exposure. For all we know, our best design might be a death trap once we get into deep space. The better plan might be to launch into a "safe" orbit and plan to return to Earth's orbit every so many years to see if the planet is fit for recolonization.

I saw that program too. The theoretical ship design was cool. Humans have awesome potential. I wish I would be around to see human civilization 1,000 years from. We are now technological infants. What is awesome about humans is that the most brilliant among us will solve any problem and develop impossible technology. Humans find a solution. For example, to travel several light years to other parts of the galaxy (and even to our nearest neighboring stars) it would take many years because you can never meet or exceed the speed of light. So, what will we do? Bring the destination to us! Space itself is not limited by the speed of light, as evidenced by the fact that space expanded many times faster than the speed of light after the big bang.

Well, there are those among us who never want to be put in a situation where we have to get a few people off world to have humanity survive. We are called space advocates.

Even if I was selected, I'd refuse to go; because it would be too compact for me to bring my computer, video game collection, and other possessions. I wouldn't want to live in a world where all I'd have is other people. I'd be so miserable without my stuff that it wouldn't be worth living. If I couldn't bring my family members and friends, I'd have another reason to stay behind. I don't have that strong of a will to survive.
