I am assuming we are speaking of the anthropomorphized "God" of the Abrahamic religions.
Most of the time when people speak of this "God" character, that is the one being referenced.

There other conceptions of "God" that would be a universal force of consciousness underlying everything.
Something more like "the force" to put it in Jedi terms. But that is more like an energy field of life which is more neutral in nature and doesn't write books, or speak through the combustion of shrubbery.

Science is finding that matter is a very small percentage of the known universe, and there is mounting evidence of many more dimensions to this universe, and possibly a Multiverse.

But I'm probably taking this off on a tangent.

At best it's some advanced alien either F-king with peoples heads, or people just plain got completely wrong, but not a deity.

Any entity willing to wipe out civilizations for not paying enough attention to him doesn't seem very deserving of worship.
Sounds pretty insecure to me.
Even toning it down, new testament style to just eternal damnation to hell for the individual not paying attention to him is still pretty bad.

I think it is more likely a "GOD" exists, than not. I like Einstein's label of "the old one" to refer to the creator of everything.

GOD had to exist outside the universe if he created it in the BIG BANG and time & space were created in the BIG BANG. So, the casual laws may not apply to something outside the universe?
